Hope and Despair is a Forge 1.20.1 modpack by Lithum-12 that rebuilds the popular "100 Days of Shock" gameplay for a newer Minecraft version. Around 134 mods sit on top of vanilla survival and turn it into a hostile, combat-heavy run where the world pushes back from the very first night.
The hook is endurance rather than completion. There is no tech tree to finish: the challenge is keeping the group alive while fights get harder, so every trip away from base, every wall you raise and every stockpile you build carries real weight. The author keeps the pack moving, and the current release on its 19.4 line is build 19.4.159.
It suits groups who want a shared ordeal more than a relaxed sandbox: friends planning their own 100-day style challenge, creators recreating the series format, or a small crew that enjoys holding a base together under pressure. A dedicated server keeps the world online around the clock, so anyone in the group can log in and push the run forward without waiting for a host to start their PC.

RAM and what drives the load
We recommend 6 GB for this pack. With 134 Forge mods, a large share of memory is taken by registries and loaded content before anyone joins, and the combat focus stacks on top of that: hostile mobs pathing toward players, projectiles in flight and entity AI ticking in every loaded chunk. Six players spread across the map keep far more chunks active than six players defending one base. If tick times climb during a big fight, measure it with spark instead of guessing:
/spark profiler start
/spark profiler stop
Pregenerating the world
A combat pack stutters worst when the server must generate fresh terrain while mobs are already attacking. Forge 1.20.1 ships its own generator, and on this version it takes a chunk count rather than a radius:
/forge generate 0 64 0 2000
Run it before your group's first day with nobody online, then restart. Keeping the crew near a shared base also caps how many chunks stay loaded, which matters more here than in a building pack, because every loaded chunk is another place where hostiles can spawn and tick.
Java version and updating
Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge runs on Java 17, so leave the server on that runtime rather than forcing a newer one. Builds on the 19.4 line arrive often. Before moving to a newer build, take a backup from the panel, read the changelog for mods that were dropped, and update in one step instead of skipping across several. A removed mod leaves missing blocks and items behind, so if your run is deep in, try the new build on a copy of the world first.
Loader
Forge on Minecraft 1.20.1
The pack runs on Forge 1.20.1 with Java 17, and every client must match the server build.
Focus
Built around combat and survival
Around 134 mods turn plain survival into a fight to last, remastered from the 100 Days of Shock format.
Memory
6 GB recommended
Hostile mobs and entity AI in loaded chunks drive the load more than buildings or machines do.
