What is the difference between BMC4, BMC5 and BMC6?

They are different builds of Better MC rather than newer versions of the same one. BMC4 is Forge on Minecraft 1.20.1, which is what this page covers, while BMC5 and BMC6 target newer Minecraft versions and different loaders. They are maintained in parallel, so a higher number is not automatically an upgrade. Pick by the Minecraft version your group wants to play and make sure everyone installs the same one.

How much RAM does a Better MC server need?

8 GB suits a group of around six. Better MC is an exploration pack with rebuilt world generation across seven dimensions, so the load lands on generating new terrain rather than on machines ticking. That makes it heavier when your group is spread out and lighter once everyone has settled. Pregenerating the overworld takes a large part of that cost off the live server.

Can players grief each other on a Better MC server?

Yes, the pack includes no land claim or protection system at all. There is no FTB Chunks and no equivalent. For a private server among friends that is usually fine, but for anything public you need a whitelist, or a protection mod that you install on the server and hand to every player, since Forge requires matching mod lists. Regular backups are the other half of that plan.

How do I pregenerate a Better MC world?

Use the Forge command, once per dimension: `/forge generate ~ ~ ~ 20000 minecraft:overworld`. The number is a total count of chunks rather than a radius, so it does not behave like Chunky or the NeoForge equivalent. With seven dimensions in this pack you will not want to do them all, so start with the overworld and add the ones your group actually visits.

Which client build do my players need?

The same one the server runs, which for us is BMC4 [FORGE] 1.20.1 v61. Forge checks the whole mod list when someone connects, so a player on an older build gets rejected rather than allowed in with problems. Since the pack is large, ask people to install it before the session rather than at the start of it, and update everyone together when you change the server build.

Why did my server crash after an update?

Two things are worth checking first. Better MC runs Fabric mods on Forge through Sinytra Connector, and some crashes come from that compatibility layer rather than the pack itself, so keep the log before you restart. Second, LunaPixelStudios do not publish server files for every client release, so an update can leave you on a build with no matching server pack. Restore your backup and move to a version that has one.

Better MC is LunaPixelStudios' vanilla+ pack, and the BMC4 line is the Forge 1.20.1 edition. The pitch is Minecraft as you already play it, with far more to find. There is no tech tree, no power grid and no automation endgame, which is exactly why it works for groups that bounced off kitchen-sink packs.

What you get instead is a rebuilt world. Biomes o' Plenty and Geophilic replace the terrain and the vanilla structures, strongholds and fortresses are overhauled, and there are seven dimensions to work through including a heavily extended Aether. Progression comes from exploring into bosses, with Mowzie's Mobs and Cataclysm supplying the fights, plus a quest book, Waystones for getting around, and rideable dragons once you are deep enough.

On a server this plays like a long expedition rather than a shared factory. People scatter instead of clustering, which changes what the server actually has to do. One naming note worth getting right before you buy: BMC4, BMC5 and BMC6 are not sequential versions of one pack, they are different Minecraft and loader combinations maintained alongside each other. RAM, and why exploring costs more here

We size BMC4 at 8 GB for a group of about six. The reason is not the mod list, it is the shape of play. This is an exploration pack across seven dimensions with overhauled terrain generation, so players are constantly walking into chunks that have never existed before, and each one runs a much heavier generation pass than vanilla. A group of six spread across three dimensions is a harder job than a group of six in one base.

The pack has no claim protection

Worth knowing before you open the server to anyone you do not know: BMC4 ships no FTB Chunks, no FTB Teams and no land claim system of any kind. Out of the box, anybody who can join can break anything. If your server is not just close friends, plan for that up front, either by keeping a whitelist or by adding a protection mod yourself and giving every player the same jar.

Pregenerate each dimension separately

There is no pregeneration mod in the pack, so use the Forge command. The important part is the dimension argument, because seven dimensions means seven passes if you want them all covered:

Fabric mods on Forge, and what that means

BMC4 uses Sinytra Connector to run Fabric mods on a Forge server, which is how it reaches its mod list. It works, but it means the pack inherits Connector's quirks, and some crashes trace back to that layer rather than to a specific mod. Keep backups, and when something breaks, save the log before restarting.

Minecraft 1.20.1 means Java 17, selected for you at install. One practical caution on updating: LunaPixelStudios do not publish a server pack for every client release, so stay on a build that has one rather than chasing the newest version number.
