What is the difference between BMC2 and BMC4?

They are parallel editions rather than sequential versions. BMC2 is the Fabric build for Minecraft 1.20.1, which is what this page covers, while BMC4 is the Forge build. Both are maintained, so a higher number is not an upgrade. Choose by loader and Minecraft version, then make sure every player installs that exact edition, because they are not cross-compatible.

How much RAM does a Better MC Fabric server need?

The pack has rebuilt world generation and hundreds of added structures, so the main cost is creating new terrain as players explore rather than machines ticking in a base. That means a scattered group is heavier than a settled one, and pregenerating the overworld takes a large share of it off the live server.

Can I add mods to this server?

Yes, but Fabric mods for Minecraft 1.20.1 only. A Forge jar for the same Minecraft version will not load, which is the usual mistake when someone has previously run the Forge edition of Better MC. Upload into `mods/` through the file manager or SFTP, give every player the identical files, and take a backup before you try anything substantial.

Should I pregenerate the world?

Yes, it is the most useful setup step for this pack. The overhauled generation and the large number of added dungeons and structures make first-visit chunks expensive, and exploration is the entire point of Better MC. Add Chunky to the server, pregenerate a sensible radius around spawn while nobody is online, and let it finish before you invite your group.

Is there griefing protection in the pack?

There is no claim system built in, which is normal for a vanilla-plus pack. For a private server among friends that is usually fine. For anything more open, use a whitelist, or add a protection mod on the server and hand the same jar to every player, since Fabric also requires matching mod lists for anything server-side that touches gameplay.

Which build should my players install?

The same one the server runs, which for us is v40 of the Fabric BMC2 edition. Installing through a launcher rather than assembling it by hand avoids most problems. Because Better MC has several parallel editions, tell your group the loader, the Minecraft version and the build number together rather than just saying Better MC.

Better MC [FABRIC] BMC2 is Luna Pixel Studios' vanilla-plus pack on Fabric for Minecraft 1.20.1. The goal is the same as the rest of the Better MC family: keep Minecraft recognizably Minecraft, then give it far more to find. There is no power grid and no automation endgame here, which is exactly why it suits groups who bounced off kitchen sinks.

World generation is rebuilt with Promenade and Geophilic, strongholds and fortresses are overhauled, and hundreds of dungeons and structures are added through When Dungeons Arise and AdoraBuild. Progression comes from exploring into that content and fighting what lives in it, with Bosses of Mass Destruction and Frostiful providing the fights, and a quest book pointing you at things when you want direction.

The quality-of-life layer is what makes it comfortable to live in: Waystones for getting around, XP Storage so levels are not lost, and Xaero's mapping. It is worth being clear about the naming, because Better MC exists in several parallel editions. This is the Fabric one, BMC2, and it is a different build from the Forge BMC4 line rather than an older or newer version of it.

We set 8 GB for a group of around six. As with the Forge edition, the cost is shaped by how this pack is played: overhauled terrain generation plus hundreds of added structures means every new area a player walks into is more expensive to create than vanilla ground. A group that scatters across the map loads more, and generates more, than a group that settles.

Fabric, and what that changes

This edition is native Fabric, which is the cleanest thing about it from a hosting point of view. Its Forge sibling reaches a similar mod list by running Fabric mods on Forge through a compatibility layer, and inherits that layer's quirks. BMC2 does not have that in the middle, so when something misbehaves you are debugging a mod rather than a translation layer.

The practical consequence is about what you add. Only Fabric mods for 1.20.1 will load. A Forge jar for the same Minecraft version is not interchangeable, and that is the most common mistake people make when moving between the two Better MC lines.

Pregenerate the overworld

This is the highest-value thing you can do for a Better MC server. The pack ships no pregeneration tool, so add Chunky, cover a sensible radius around spawn while nobody is online, and let it finish. It converts the hitching players feel when they explore into one job done in advance.

Java, protection and updating

Minecraft 1.20.1 means Java 17, selected for you at install. Decide early how you are handling protection and griefing, since a vanilla-plus pack gives you no built-in claim system to lean on, and a whitelist is the simplest answer for a private group. Back up before updating and move every player's client on the same day.
