Cave Horror Project is a horror pack that actually commits to being one. The mods it picks are the ones designed to frighten you: the Cave Dweller that stalks you underground, The Anomaly, Weeping Angels that move when you stop looking, and Herobrine events rebuilt with legacy structures. The menus, the audio and the lighting are all reworked to match.
Underneath that is more structure than horror packs usually bother with. There are over 240 quests across six chapters with a real progression path, so the pack gives you somewhere to go rather than just something to be scared of. Boss encounters like Apollyon sit at the end of that.
What makes it worth running as a server rather than playing alone is the communication layer. The pack ships proximity voice chat alongside craftable walkie-talkies, so your group can hear each other in the dark and lose contact at exactly the wrong moment. Splitting up genuinely means something when you can only hear someone over a radio. It runs on Forge 1.20.1 and suits a small group who want to scare each other on purpose.
Hosting Cave Horror Project
6 GB for a group of six
We set 6 GB. Cave Horror Project is mid-weight rather than a kitchen sink, so the memory goes on the pack's custom entities and structures rather than on hundreds of machines. A smaller group can sit below this comfortably, and the figure has room for the horror mobs the pack keeps around you.
Voice chat needs its own port
This is the one piece of setup people miss, and on this pack it is not optional, because proximity chat is half the experience. Voice chat does not travel over the normal Minecraft connection. It needs a UDP port of its own, and the default is 24454. The setting lives in:
config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties
If the port available on your server is not the default, change the port= line there to match and restart. When the voice chat icon shows as disconnected for everyone, this is almost always why, rather than anything to do with the mod itself.
The horror mobs are the load
Cave Horror Project's signature mobs are designed to follow players around and to keep existing when you are not looking at them, which is exactly the behavior that costs a server. That means load tracks how many players are active and how spread out they are more than it tracks the map. A group exploring together is cheaper to run than the same six people in six different caves.
Java, updating and chapters
Forge 1.20.1 means Java 17, selected for you at install. The pack is actively developed and new chapters have been added over time, so read the notes before updating a world mid-campaign: a quest chapter changing under a group partway through it is more disruptive here than on a sandbox pack. Back up first, and update every player's client at the same time.
Voice
Proximity chat needs UDP
Voice runs on its own port, 24454 by default, set in the voicechat server properties file.
RAM
6 GB is enough here
A mid-weight pack, so memory goes on custom entities and structures rather than heavy automation.
Design
Built for a group
Walkie-talkies and proximity audio mean splitting up has real consequences, which is the point.
