Why does our RLCraft server lag when we explore?

Almost always chunk generation. Recurrent Complex, roguelike dungeons and Ice and Fire dens all inject structures while chunks generate, so several players walking into fresh terrain at once stalls the main thread. Pregenerate the area with Chunk Pregenerator before you open the server, keep view-distance at 10 or lower, and make sure `max-tick-time=-1` is set so Forge does not shut the server down during a slow tick.

How much RAM does an RLCraft server need?

We recommend 6 GB for about six players, and 4 GB is fine for four. Shivaxi quotes 3 to 4 GB for single-player, so a shared server wants more than that but not dramatically more. The pack runs on Java 8, which does not do much with very large heaps, and extra memory will not fix lag that is really ungenerated chunks or too many loaded entities.

Can I add mods to RLCraft?

Yes, as long as they are 1.12.2 Forge mods and every player installs the identical files. Upload the jar into `mods/` through the file manager or SFTP, then send the same jar to your group. Client-only mods such as minimaps do not belong on the server. Back up first, because a mod built for another Minecraft version will stop the pack loading at all.

Which RLCraft version do my players need?

Exactly the one the server runs. Our install uses release 2.9.3, so everyone should launch RLCraft 2.9.3 from their launcher. A client on 2.9.2d or on any 2.8.x build will be rejected, because Forge compares the full mod list and every version in it. If you change the server build, tell the group to update before they try to reconnect.

Can I update RLCraft without losing the world?

Inside the 2.9 line, usually yes, and the panel's update flow offers a Keep my world option plus a backup in the same step. Afterwards run `/bq_admin default load` and `/bqs_loot default load` in the console so quests and loot tables match. A 2.8.2 world is a different matter: the pack's own notes say those saves are not compatible with 2.9 and will produce crashes and broken quests.

Can dragons destroy our base?

By default yes. Ice and Fire dragons break blocks while they attack, and a roost that generated near your build will eventually find you. Open `config/ice_and_fire.cfg` and set `Dragon Griefing` to `2` to stop block breaking entirely, or `1` to limit them to weak blocks. Restart afterwards. The same file also holds a blacklist if you only want to protect specific blocks.

RLCraft is Shivaxi's hardcore rebuild of Minecraft survival, built on Forge 1.12.2 and still sitting on release 2.9.3 from June 2023. The pack rewrites the difficulty curve rather than adding to it. You spawn with no natural health regeneration, a thirst bar, a body temperature that can kill you, and mobs that spot you long before you spot them. Your first hour goes on a canteen, a bedroll and a way to splint a broken leg, not on a diamond pickaxe.

The long game is Ice and Fire dragons, Lycanite's Mobs bosses, Battle Towers, roguelike dungeons and the structures Recurrent Complex scatters across the map. Progress is gated by gear and by a skill system that makes you spend levels before you can use good equipment, so it plays closer to an RPG than to a tech-tree pack.

On a shared server that changes how groups behave. Dying costs real progress, so most teams fortify one base and push outward from it instead of scattering. Everything in the pack is 1.12.2 era, which is why it still needs Java 8. It suits groups who want survival to be genuinely hostile and do not mind an old Minecraft version.

Hosting RLCraft

RAM and group size

We size RLCraft at 6 GB, which is the modded band from our Minecraft RAM calculator for a group of around six. What costs memory here is not the mod list, it is entity load: Lycanite's Mobs spawns constantly, and Battle Towers, roguelike dungeons and Recurrent Complex structures keep large mob populations alive inside loaded chunks. Four players are comfortable on 4 GB. Past eight, add RAM rather than view distance.

The four lines the pack tells you to set

RLCraft's server files ship a plain text file called FOR SERVERS ONLY - SET THESE IN SERVER.PROPERTIES.txt. Its contents are not suggestions:

Shivaxi's reasoning, in short: command blocks must be on or villagers will not spawn correctly in generated structures; flight must be allowed or the server kicks anyone riding a flying mount or using a fairy ring; difficulty 3 is what the pack is balanced around; and max-tick-time=-1 stops Forge deciding the server has crashed while a large structure generates. The same file asks for view-distance=10, dropping to 8 or 6 with a lot of players and no lower.

Pregenerate if you plan to be busy

The pack ships no pregeneration mod. Shivaxi's own instruction, for servers expecting more than ten players, is to add Chunk Pregenerator to mods/ and run:

/pregen utils setPlayerLimit 1 pauses the job while players are online. Restart when it finishes.

Java, dragons and updates

1.12.2 means Java 8, and the pack will not boot on a modern JDK; our installer picks that image for you. If dragons wrecking bases is ruining the game, open config/ice_and_fire.cfg and set Dragon Griefing to 2 (2 is none, 1 is weak blocks only, 0 is the default). Back up before any update. Worlds from 2.8.2 are not compatible with 2.9 and want a fresh start; inside the 2.9 line, run /bq_admin default load and /bqs_loot default load afterwards so quests and loot tables match the new build.

RAM

6 GB for a group of six

Entity load drives RLCraft, not mod count. Lycanite's spawns and dungeon mobs keep loaded chunks permanently busy.

Java 8

Forge 1.12.2 only

RLCraft will not boot on a modern JDK. The installer selects the Java 8 image when it deploys the pack.

Worlds

2.8.2 saves do not survive 2.9

The pack's own notes say old worlds break on the 2.9 jump. Start fresh rather than migrating.
