Vault Hunters is the closest modded Minecraft gets to a roguelike action RPG. The overworld is where you build, farm and prepare. The actual game happens inside vaults: timed, generated dungeon runs you enter with a crystal, loot as fast as you can, and leave before the clock beats you.
Everything else feeds that loop. You gain levels and spend skill points on abilities and talents, unlock mods themselves through knowledge points rather than having them handed to you, and build gear specifically to survive deeper runs. The long goal is collecting the 25 artifacts and beating the final boss, which is a genuine campaign rather than a vague endgame.
On a server this produces a rhythm other packs do not have. People spend an hour preparing together, then everybody goes into their own vault, then everyone comes back to compare loot and rebuild. It works particularly well for a group that plays on the same evenings, because the preparation is collaborative and the runs are personal. The pack is built by the Iskall85 team on Forge 1.18.2.
Hosting Vault Hunters
8 GB, and where it still gets tight
We set 8 GB. Vault Hunters is a pack where the ceiling matters far more than the average, which is why it sits higher than its mod count suggests. The overworld base is modest by modded standards, but vault runs are demanding, and several players running vaults at once is the heaviest thing the server will ever do. Eight gigabytes gives that peak room to breathe. If your group is larger than about six, or everyone reliably plays on the same evening, plan to go higher rather than assuming the figure holds.
Vault entry is a generation burst
A vault is built when you enter it. That makes opening a crystal a concentrated piece of work on the main thread rather than the gentle background cost of walking through terrain, and two people opening vaults in the same moment stacks those bursts together.
The practical fix is social rather than technical: on a busy server, stagger entries so people are not all opening crystals at once. It costs nothing and it removes most of the stutter that gets blamed on the host.
The save grows with play, not with exploring
Most packs grow their world when players travel. Vault Hunters grows it every time someone runs a vault, because each run needs space in the vault dimension. A server that has been running for months can therefore have a large save without anyone having explored much overworld at all. Keep an eye on backups and disk use, and take a backup before any pack update rather than after.
Java, mods and updating
Forge 1.18.2 means Java 17, which the installer selects for you. Vault Hunters is heavily scripted around its own progression, so be careful adding mods: anything touching loot, gear or world generation can interfere with the vault system. Update your players' clients at the same time as the server, since Forge rejects a mismatched mod list on connect.
RAM
8 GB for the peaks
The overworld base is light, but vault generation is demanding, so size for the busiest evening rather than the average.
Load
Vault entry is the spike
Vaults are generated as you enter, so several players opening crystals at once is the server's hardest moment.
Disk
The save grows per run
Every vault run needs new space in the vault dimension, so the world grows with play, not exploring.
