SkyFactory 4 is Darkosto's skyblock pack, and the one most people mean by skyblock with mods. You start on a tiny platform in an empty sky and build everything from there, but the resource loop is not the old sieve-and-hammer grind. SkyFactory 4 runs on Sky Orchards: you crossbreed resource trees, each one producing the acorns for a specific material, so expanding your material list is a deliberate breeding project rather than luck with gravel.
From there it becomes a full tech and magic pack. Progression is tracked through advancements rather than a quest book, and there is an optional Prestige mode where mods, items and mechanics stay locked until you spend points to unlock them, which turns a familiar pack back into a decision.
What matters before you rent anything is that SkyFactory 4 ships more than 30 world types, from the classic void island to Skygrid, Cave Dimension, Lost Cities and a CompactSky mode that gives every player their own Compact Machine. You choose it once, and changing it later means wiping the world. It is Forge 1.12.2 on Java 8. It suits groups who like automation and want a shared build project with a clear start.
Hosting SkyFactory 4
Pick the world type before the first boot
This is the one thing that catches every new SkyFactory 4 server. The world type is not a menu choice, it is a pair of server.properties keys that have to be right before the world generates. For the classic island:
level-type=DEFAULT
generator-settings={"Topography-Preset":"Sky Factory 4"}
CompactSky, where everyone spawns in a shared hub and claims their own Compact Machine, is the exception that also changes level-type:
level-type=compactsky
generator-settings={"Topography-Preset":"Compactsky","schema":"test002","givePSD":false,"size":"MEDIUM"}
size takes SMALL, MEDIUM or LARGE, which is 16, 64 or 256 machines. Cave Dimension, Skygrid, Lost Cities and the rest follow the same pattern with their own preset name. Changing the level type afterwards means a new world, so decide with the group first.
Getting players onto their islands
A player who joins after generation can end up floating in the void with nothing. The fix is a Topography command from the console:
/topography island home <player>
That teleports them to their island and creates one if they do not have it yet. /topography island new, /topography island info and /topography spawn cover the rest. Teaming up runs through Together Forever, with /together invite <player>.
Prestige is per player, and resets on update
Prestige unlocks are not shared between players, and nothing unlocked in single player carries to a server. Operators turn the mode on or off in prestige.cfg with Prestige Enabled Default, and that setting has to be set again after every pack update, so check it whenever you change the build.
RAM, Java and what actually ticks
We size this pack at 8 GB. Skyblock load is the opposite of an exploration pack: there is almost no terrain to generate, and the cost is automation, machines, mob farms and Compact Machine interiors all ticking inside a handful of permanently loaded chunks. That grows with what you build, not with how far you walk, so a busy late-game base is heavier than a fresh one. 1.12.2 means Java 8, which the installer selects for you. Back up before a pack update, and note that when a group finishes the Parabox the server has to be restarted.
World type
Set generator-settings first
The world preset lives in server.properties and is fixed at generation. Changing it later means wiping the world.
RAM
8 GB for automation
Load comes from machines and farms ticking in a few permanent chunks, so it grows with your build, not the map.
Prestige
Per player, not shared
Solo unlocks do not transfer to a server, and the prestige config has to be set again after every update.
