DawnCraft, published as DawnCraft: Echoes of Legends, is bstylia14's attempt to make Minecraft play like a souls-like. Combat is the giveaway. Attacks have weight and recovery, you dodge and parry instead of clicking faster, and bosses have real attack patterns you are expected to learn and fail against several times before you beat them.
Around that sits an RPG structure that is unusual for a Minecraft pack. There is a custom questing system with a Guild Master handing out objectives, a knowledge system that gates what you can actually use, and a reputation system that changes how the world treats you. Progress comes from beating things, not from building a base and automating it.
On a server that produces a very specific experience: a group working through the same bosses together, wiping together, and learning the same patterns. It is not a pack where people go off and do their own projects. Be aware that progression is tracked per player rather than per team, which shapes how you should run the server, and is covered below. It suits small groups who play at the same times and want a challenge with a shared curve.
Hosting DawnCraft
RAM, from the author's own figures
bstylia14 asks for at least 6 GB and recommends 8 to 12 GB. We set 8 GB, which is where a group of about six should sit. That is fair for what the pack does: hundreds of mods, custom entities with far more complex combat behavior than vanilla mobs, and hand-placed structures across the map.
Everyone runs their own quest line
This is the thing to understand before you invite people, because it is a design decision rather than a bug. Quest progress, knowledge and attributes are tracked per player. If the Guild Master wants ten looters killed, every player kills ten. If a quest needs a boss dead, the group fights that boss once per person who needs the credit.
A friend who joins two weeks late starts at the beginning while everyone else is deep in, and some workstations and points of interest stay locked until they catch up. Two things help: use the built-in FTB Teams party menu so quests can be shared where the pack allows it, and plan your server around a group that starts together rather than one that grows over time.
The load is combat, not the map
When TPS drops on a DawnCraft server it is usually a fight, not the world. The combat system runs far more logic per entity than vanilla AI, so a boss with adds, or a dense mob area with several players in it, costs more than the same number of vanilla mobs would. That means raising spawn rates for more action gets expensive quickly, and simulation-distance in server.properties is a more useful lever than view-distance if you need to claw back headroom.
Java, pregen and updates
The author requires Java 17 or 18, and the installer picks the image for you. The pack ships no pregeneration tool, so add Chunky if you want one, which is worthwhile here because players constantly push into new terrain looking for structures.
Every DawnCraft changelog opens with the same instruction: back up your world before updating. Take it literally.
Progression
Quests are per player
Everyone completes objectives individually, so a boss may need fighting once for each player who needs it.
RAM
8 GB, matching the author
bstylia14 asks for 6 GB minimum and recommends 8 to 12 GB for the pack.
Performance
Fights cost more than distance
Souls-like combat runs heavy per-entity logic, so boss adds hurt TPS more than a large view distance does.
