FTB Revelation is the pack a lot of people mean when they talk about the golden age of modded Minecraft. It is not themed and it is not guided. It is a large, general-purpose 1.12.2 kitchen sink built so that tech players, magic players, builders and explorers can all share one world without the pack pushing any of them in a direction.

The design choice that matters most is a quiet one: the FTB Team deliberately left the mods close to stock. Very little is retuned or rebalanced, which means the wiki page or the tutorial video you find for any mod in it actually matches what is in front of you. On a pack this size that is worth a great deal, especially if some of your group are new to modded Minecraft.

The other half of its reputation is stability. Revelation was assembled with performance and reliability as the selection criteria rather than novelty, and it still gets occasional maintenance releases years after 1.12.2 stopped being current. It suits groups who want a long-lived server and are happy on an older Minecraft version.

Hosting FTB Revelation

6 GB, which is FTB's own recommendation

FTB publish 6 GB as the recommended figure for Revelation, with 4 GB as the minimum, and that is what we set. Revelation is a mid-weight pack by modern standards, so this has room in it for a group of around six with substantial bases.

Java 8 is not negotiable

Minecraft 1.12.2 runs on Java 8 and nothing newer, and our installer selects that image for you. It also means the old rules apply: Java 8 does not do anything useful with a very large heap, so pushing well past 8 GB tends to make garbage collection pauses worse rather than better. If the server feels slow, the answer is almost never more memory.

Claims and chunkloading are FTB Utilities

This is where Revelation differs from every modern FTB pack. There is no FTB Chunks here. Claiming and chunkloading come from FTB Utilities, the 1.12.2 era tool, configured through config/ftbutilities.cfg and through ranks.

The limits people actually want to change are rank permissions rather than config values, set in the ranks file under local/ftbutilities on the server:

"ftbutilities.claims.max_chunks": 1000
"ftbutilities.chunkloader.max_chunks": 250

That file has to be valid JSON, so check it before restarting rather than after.

Exploring, and keeping the world healthy

Revelation generates a normal, varied overworld with a lot of mod worldgen in it, so first-visit chunk generation is a real cost when several people explore at once. The pack ships no pregeneration mod, so if you want one, Chunk Pregenerator is the 1.12.2 option to add to mods/ on the server.

Back up before any version change. On a pack this old the practical risk is not the Minecraft version, it is that your group has years of base in the save.

Java 8

1.12.2 only

Revelation will not run on a modern JDK, and very large heaps hurt Java 8 rather than helping it.

Claims

FTB Utilities, not FTB Chunks

Limits are rank permissions in the ranks file under local/ftbutilities, not values in the pack config.

Mods

Left close to stock

Very little is rebalanced, so wikis and tutorials for each mod match what your players actually have.
