Homestead is CozyStudios' answer to the observation that not everyone wants their Minecraft server to be a war or a factory. It is a building and settling pack, and the world was clearly made first: Tectonic and Geophilic shape the terrain into lush forests, open fields, real mountains and rivers, while Nature's Spirit and Oh The Biomes We've Gone add variety without pushing it away from the vanilla feel.
Scattered through that are hand-placed structures and procedural ruins from Repurposed Structures and YUNG's mods, so exploring turns up places worth building near rather than dungeons to clear.
The questbook is the part that makes it work for a group. It is organised into themed chapters, homesteading, wild exploration, deep mining, magical secrets, and it rewards exploration and creativity rather than gating them. There is no forced path, so one player can spend a month on a farmhouse while another goes caving, and both are playing the pack correctly. Shaders come bundled with several presets so players do not have to install anything. It runs on Fabric 1.20.1 and suits groups who want to build together somewhere pretty.
Hosting Homestead
Shaders are your players' problem, not the server's
Worth saying first, because it comes up. Homestead ships with several shader presets already installed, from lightweight options up to demanding ones. All of that runs on each player's graphics card and costs the server nothing. If someone reports the game running badly, ask which shader preset they are on before you look at the server, because switching to a lighter preset usually fixes it instantly.
8 GB, and the world is why
We set 8 GB for a group of around six. At around 366 entries this is a large pack, and the terrain mods mean every new chunk does considerably more work than vanilla generation. A cozy pack still explores, because finding a good building site is half the appeal.
Pregeneration is therefore worth the wait here, and the pack ships no tool for it, so add one to the server and cover a radius around spawn before your group starts.
Building groups load chunks differently
The usual advice about automation does not quite apply to this pack. What a Homestead server accumulates is builds: large, detailed, block-heavy areas that sit in loaded chunks and stay there. That is gentler than machinery ticking, but it grows steadily and it means backups matter more than usual, because a month of somebody's building is not something they will cheerfully redo.
Take the backup the panel offers before any update, and keep them regularly rather than only when you remember.
Fabric, Java and updating
This is a Fabric pack on Minecraft 1.20.1, so Java 17, selected at install, and Forge jars will not load. The pack is actively developed, so read the notes before updating a world your group has invested in, and move every player's client on the same day.
Shaders
Client side, not server side
Bundled shader presets run on each player's graphics card and cost the server nothing at all.
Worldgen
Terrain mods make chunks costly
Tectonic and the biome mods do real work per chunk, so pregenerating around spawn pays off.
Backups
Builds are the valuable thing
A building server accumulates work nobody wants to redo, so keep backups regularly rather than occasionally.
