The load grows with automation rather than with exploring, since the world is stone rather than open terrain, so a late-game base full of machines is what eventually pushes you higher, not the size of the map.

Should I pregenerate the world?

Much less useful than on a normal pack. StoneBlock generates biome rings around your starting point instead of open terrain, and players tunnel rather than travel, so there is little first-visit generation cost to remove in advance. The pack also ships no pregeneration mod. Spend the effort on lighting and on chunk claim settings instead, which affect this pack far more.

Why do our machines stop when nobody is online?

FTB Chunks only keeps force-loaded chunks ticking while a team member is online unless you change it. Set `force_load_mode` to `ALWAYS` in the `force_loading` group of the FTB Chunks server config and restart. On a world that already exists, edit the copy under `world/serverconfig` rather than the one in `defaultconfigs`, which is only used when a new world is created.

Why is our base getting laggy as it grows?

Usually mobs. Digging out a large base creates a lot of unlit stone, and every dark block is somewhere a mob can spawn, so an excavated area builds up a population that a surface base would not. Light your tunnels and dead ends properly. If that does not explain it, run `/spark profiler` since spark ships with the pack, and read what is actually costing tick time.

Can I update StoneBlock 3 without losing our world?

Within the 1.x line updates generally carry the world across, and the panel's update flow keeps it and can back it up in the same step. Read the changelog first, since a build that removes a mod also removes its blocks from the save. Everyone needs to update their client at the same time, because Forge compares the mod list when they connect.

Is StoneBlock 3 or StoneBlock 4 the better server?

StoneBlock 3 is the settled one: Forge 1.18.2, a smaller mod list and a finished feel. StoneBlock 4 is the current chapter on 1.21.1 with Vaults, Echoes and the World Engine, and it wants 8 GB rather than 6 GB. Pick 3 if you want something stable to run for a long time, and 4 if your group wants the newer content.

StoneBlock is the idea that made a lot of people rethink skyblock. Instead of a platform in the void, you wake up sealed inside solid stone, and the only way anywhere is to mine it. FTB StoneBlock 3 is the FTB Team's third take on that, running on Forge 1.18.2.

The clever part is the map. Rather than normal terrain, the world is generated as rings of biome around your starting point, so as you tunnel outward you break into different environments, and the Nether and the End are never a long trip away. That keeps the pack feeling like exploration even though you are underground the whole time.

On top of that sits a full tech and magic progression with a quest book to steer you, plus scripted in-world events that fire as you go. It is a kitchen-sink pack with a very strong sense of place, which is what makes it work well for a group: everyone is digging out of the same rock, and the base grows as a shared excavation rather than as scattered outposts. It suits teams who want structure without a strict questline dictating their day.

FTB publish a recommended figure per pack, and for StoneBlock 3 that is 6 GB against a 4 GB minimum. We set the recommended one. For a group of around six that is right, and it reflects a pack that is tech-heavy but not enormous.

A world of stone changes the job

Two things follow from the world being solid rock, and both are useful to know before you tune anything.

First, pregeneration is close to pointless here. There is no sprawling surface terrain to walk into, so the usual advice to pregenerate a large radius does not apply the way it does on an overworld pack. The pack ships no pregeneration mod either.

Second, mob spawning behaves differently. Every unlit block of stone your group tunnels through is a valid dark spawn space, so a large excavated base can quietly build up a mob population that a surface base never would. Lighting your dig sites is a performance measure here, not just a safety one.

Claims and keeping machines running

The pack includes FTB Chunks, FTB Teams and FTB Ranks. The setting worth checking early lives in the force_loading group of the FTB Chunks server config:

Left on its default, force-loaded chunks only tick while a team member is online, so overnight automation quietly stops. Note that the copy in defaultconfigs seeds new worlds only: once a world exists, the live file is the one under world/serverconfig.

Java and updating

Minecraft 1.18.2 means Java 17, which the installer selects. spark ships with the pack, so /spark profiler is available when something slows down. Back up before a version change and update your players at the same time.
