Pregenerating the world

Forge 1.20.1 has no Chunky, so use the built-in generator, which takes a chunk count rather than a radius in blocks:

Run it with nobody online and let it finish before the first session. Horror packs punish an ungenerated world hardest: the custom structures are expensive to place, and a player sprinting into fresh chunks at night is exactly when the server stalls and the monsters catch up. Pregenerate a few thousand blocks around spawn, then again around any new base.

Java version and updating

Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge runs on Java 17, and that is what the pack expects. Forge builds for this version target Java 17, and a newer Java release is a classic cause of a server that refuses to boot. Take a backup and read the pack's changelog before you move to a newer build: quest data and custom worldgen can shift between versions, and a structure added in an update only appears in chunks you have not generated yet.
