Alaskan Wilderness drops you at the end of an expedition, outside a shelter that has been left to rot. Nobody is coming back for you. The Forge Labs Team built the pack on Forge 1.20.1 around 70 mods that turn the overworld into a hostile northern frontier where staying warm matters as much as staying fed.

The hook is pressure. Every trip out of the cabin is a trade between gathering supplies and getting back before the cold sets in, and the woods are full of predators that treat a lost player as dinner. Combat is part of the loop, but the smartest early move is usually to patch up the abandoned camp, stock firewood and food, and pick your fights carefully.

It suits small groups who want a tense, grounded survival story rather than a tech race or a magic tree. Friends can split the work: one keeps the fire and the pantry going, another scouts and hunts, a third repairs the shelter. A shared server keeps that camp standing between sessions, so the struggle to survive the winter carries on every night you log in.

Hosting Alaskan Wilderness

RAM and what drives the load

With 70 mods the pack sits in the light class, and 5 GB holds a group of around six players comfortably. Load in Alaskan Wilderness comes less from machines and more from the living world: wildlife spawning around each player, weather and temperature checks ticking constantly, and players spreading out to forage in different directions. If the server feels sluggish, profile it before adding memory:

/spark profiler start

Stop it after a few minutes with /spark profiler stop and read which mod or entity eats the tick.

Pregenerating the frozen frontier

Foraging runs push players far from the cabin, and fresh terrain generation is the most expensive thing a 1.20.1 Forge server does mid session. Generate the area around spawn before your group arrives so expeditions load existing chunks instead of building them while a bear closes in. Forge ships its own generator, which takes a chunk count rather than a radius:

/forge generate ~ ~ ~ 3000

Run it with nobody online and let it finish before opening the server.

Java 17 and updating the pack

Forge 1.20.1 runs on Java 17, which the server image already provides, so there is nothing to switch by hand. Build 1.0.0 is currently the only release, which makes the setup stable for a long winter campaign. If the Forge Labs Team ships a new build, take a backup of the world first, then install the update over the existing files and boot once with nobody online. Check the console for missing registry warnings before inviting your group back to camp.
