How many players suit a Beyond Depth server?

The pack plays best with a small party, and our calculator sizes 8 GB around six players. More can join, but every extra explorer generates new terrain and keeps another area loaded, so a bigger group spread across dimensions needs more RAM than one that sticks together for boss fights.

How do I update Beyond Depth safely?

Take a backup first, then read the changelog of the new build for mods that were removed or replaced, because a world can lose blocks and items that belonged to them. Install the new build from the Modpacks tab and have every player update their client to the same version before they join again.

Can I add or remove mods?

Yes, through the mods folder in the file manager or over SFTP. Purely server-side mods only need to sit on the server, but anything that adds blocks, items or mobs must match on every client. Removing a mod that already generated content in your world can wipe those blocks, so test changes on a copy of the world first.

Beyond Depth adds a lot of worldgen, so every unexplored chunk takes more work to create than in vanilla. One player sprinting through new land or stepping into a fresh dimension can keep the server busy generating terrain. Pregenerating the overworld and asking explorers to travel at a steady pace keeps the tick rate stable for everyone else.

Beyond Depth is a Forge 1.20.1 modpack by blueversal that turns Minecraft into a long expedition. Around 530 mods add new dimensions, reworked combat and bosses that hit hard enough to punish a careless approach, while the Vanilla+ design keeps the familiar survival loop recognisable underneath.

The hook is the descent itself. Each dimension and each boss raises the stakes, so gear, food and preparation start to matter long before the late game. Exploration never runs dry: structures, biomes and dungeons keep appearing the further you travel, and the combat changes mean you win fights with timing and positioning rather than by clicking as fast as you can.

It suits a small group of friends that wants a shared adventure with real danger, splitting up to scout new ground and regrouping when a boss is waiting. We recommend 8 GB for Beyond Depth. With 530 mods the server spends a large share of that memory before anyone joins, simply holding registries, recipes and worldgen data. The real spikes come from exploration: players fanning out into separate dimensions force the server to keep several worlds ticking at once, and boss arenas packed with modded mobs add entity load on top. If a session stutters, add the spark profiler and run /spark profiler start during the lag to see which mod or dimension is responsible.

Pregenerating the world

Exploration is the whole point of this pack, which makes fresh chunk generation the most expensive job your server does. Every step into unexplored terrain runs the extra structure and biome rules the pack layers on top of vanilla. Generating the overworld around spawn before the group sets out moves that cost away from the middle of a fight. Forge 1.20.1 ships its own generator, which takes a chunk count rather than a radius:

/forge generate ~ ~ ~ 4000

Run it while nobody is online and let it finish.

Java version and updates

Beyond Depth runs on Forge 1.20.1, which is built for Java 17, so keep the server's runtime on Java 17. The pack is actively maintained, and the newest build at the time of writing is Ver13.0.3. Before you update, take a backup, read the changelog for mods that were removed or swapped, and move client and server to exactly the same build. A version mismatch between players and the server is the most common reason someone suddenly cannot join after an update.
