FTB OceanBlock is the FTB Team's take on the island pack, and its best idea is a restriction rather than an addition: you cannot swim. That single change turns the ocean from scenery into a hazard, and the whole progression becomes about earning your way into the water.

You start on a small island with the sea all around you. Resources come from sluicing gravel, sand, dirt and dust rather than from mining, and from breaking the rafts that drift past. Over 550 quests guide you through a genuinely long journey: a custom crafting system built on Tempered jars, then draconic technology, and eventually a scuba suit that lets you go under properly and reach the custom structures waiting in the deep.

The obsidian boat is a running joke among people who have played it, and the treasure hunting across an endless ocean is what keeps groups going after the early grind. This is the original 1.16.5 pack rather than the newer OceanBlock 2, so it is finished and settled. It suits a group who want a long guided progression with a strong sense of place.

Hosting FTB OceanBlock

Set the world type to default

FTB give one explicit server instruction for this pack, and it is easy to get wrong because the pack is an island pack. In server.properties:

level-type=default

Do not reach for a void or flat world type on the assumption that an island pack needs one. The pack builds its own starting island on a normal world type, and choosing something else gives you a broken start that cannot be fixed without regenerating.

6 GB, which is FTB's own recommendation

FTB publish 6 GB as recommended for OceanBlock against a 4 GB minimum, and that is what we set. It suits a group of around six. Ocean is cheap terrain to generate compared with varied land, so most of that memory serves what your players build rather than the world itself.

Everything happens in a small area

Island packs concentrate. Your group's base, machines, sluices and storage all sit within a handful of chunks that stay loaded, and that density grows steadily as the questline pushes you toward bigger production. There is no meaningful worldgen cost to pregenerate away, so performance work here is about what is built rather than where people go.

FTB Chunks, Teams and Ranks ship with the pack, carrying the familiar FTB default: force-loaded chunks tick only while a team member is online. On an island pack that means your whole production line stops when the last person logs off, so set force_load_mode to ALWAYS in the FTB Chunks server config under world/serverconfig if you want it running overnight.

Java 8 and a finished pack

Minecraft 1.16.5 in this pack runs on Java 8, selected for you at install. It has been complete for a while, so a world you start now will not be disrupted by updates. If you want the newer entry instead, OceanBlock 2 is a separate pack on Minecraft 1.21.1 with its own progression rather than a version of this one.

World type

level-type=default

FTB state this explicitly. Do not pick a void world type just because it is an island pack.

Design

You cannot swim

The ocean is a hazard until the questline earns you a scuba suit, which shapes the whole progression.
