How do I set Titan or Kappa mode on a server?

Edit `config/packmode.cfg` and change `S:packMode=normal` to `titan` or `kappa`, on the server and on every client, before the pack is loaded. The in-game `/packmode` command exists, but the server and the clients still need restarting after it. Both sides must match, because the modes change actual recipes rather than just difficulty numbers.

What happens if a player is on a different pack mode?

Confusion, and it is the most common problem on a Project Ozone server. Because the modes alter recipes, a player on Normal and a server on Kappa will disagree about what things cost, and quests will not behave as expected. Agree the mode before you start, check that everybody has edited their config, and treat a mismatch as the first thing to rule out.

Which world type should I use?

Garden of Glass, the skyblock world type the pack recommends and is designed around. Other types will load, but the quest progression assumes you are starting on a small island with almost nothing. Set it before the world is first generated, because the world type is baked in at that moment and changing it later means starting over.

How much RAM does a Project Ozone 3 server need?

8 GB. The author states the pack needs at least 6 GB to load at all and may crash below that, and treats 8 GB as the top of the sensible range. Since this is a Java 8 pack, that really is the useful band rather than a floor to build on, and adding much more tends to lengthen garbage collection pauses instead of helping.

Can we switch difficulty modes partway through?

It is not something the pack is built for. Because modes change recipes rather than damage numbers, moving an established world from Normal to Kappa leaves you with a base built under rules that no longer apply. If your group wants a harder run, the clean answer is a fresh world on the new mode, with the old one backed up in case anyone wants to return.

Is Project Ozone 3 too hard for a casual group?

Normal mode is a fair modded skyblock and perfectly approachable for a group that has played a quest pack before. Titan and especially Kappa are a different proposition and are meant to take a very long time. The mistake is picking Kappa because it sounds impressive. Start on Normal unless everyone genuinely wants a multi-month grind.

Project Ozone 3: A New Way Forward is the pack people point at when they want to know how hard modded Minecraft can get. It is a Better Questing pack of around 1200 quests spanning tech, magic and exploration, normally played on a Garden of Glass skyblock world where you begin on a small island with a tree and very little else.

The feature that defines it is pack modes. The same pack ships as Normal, Titan and Kappa, and they are not difficulty sliders in the usual sense: they change recipes and requirements, so a task that is a simple craft on Normal becomes a production chain on Titan and something considerably worse on Kappa. Kappa in particular has a reputation earned over years.

Rewards come through RAK, a currency you earn from quests and spend when you choose, rather than loot chests filling your inventory. That fits the pack's character: everything is deliberate, everything is a decision. It runs on Forge 1.12.2 and suits a group who want a long project with a clearly defined difficulty they agreed on in advance.

Pick the pack mode before anyone plays

This is the single most important step, and it has to be done on both sides. The mode lives in a config file:

Change that value to titan or kappa on the server and on every client before the pack is loaded. There is also a /packmode command in game, but even when you use it both the server and the clients still need restarting. A server on one mode and a player on another is the classic Project Ozone support ticket, because the recipes genuinely differ.

Agree the mode with your group first. Moving a world between modes partway through is not something the pack is designed for.

World type is Garden of Glass

The pack recommends Garden of Glass, the skyblock world type, and that is how nearly everyone plays it. Other world types will run, but the quests and progression assume the skyblock start. Like all world type decisions, it is fixed once the world generates, so set it before the first boot.

The author is specific: the pack needs at least 6 GB to load and the pack might crash with less, with 8 GB as the sensible upper figure. We set 8 GB. Since this is Java 8, that is genuinely the useful range rather than a starting point to climb from.

As with any skyblock, there is no terrain to pregenerate. Your load is machine density in a handful of permanently loaded chunks, and it grows steadily as the base matures.

Java and updating

Minecraft 1.12.2 means Java 8, selected for you at install. The pack has been finished for years, so a world you start now will not be disturbed by updates, which is part of why it remains a good long-project server.
