FTB Infinity Evolved is the pack a generation of modded Minecraft players grew up on. It is a 1.7.10 kitchen sink from the era when that meant something specific: Thermal Expansion, Applied Energistics, Botania, Thaumcraft and the rest of the mods that defined the period, assembled by the FTB Team with quests to guide you through them.

What keeps it relevant is the mode switch. Infinity Evolved ships Normal and Expert, and Expert is not a difficulty slider. It rewrites recipes so that progression crosses between mods: you cannot stay inside one tech tree and finish, you have to learn several and combine them. That design is the direct ancestor of every expert pack that followed, and for a lot of people it is still the best version of the idea.

Running it now is a deliberate choice. Minecraft 1.7.10 is ancient, the mod list is frozen, and the pack has been finished for years. In exchange you get something completely stable, thoroughly documented by a decade of guides, and lighter on a server than anything modern of comparable scope. It suits a group who want the classic expert experience together.

Decide Normal or Expert before you start

The mode is the first decision and it shapes the entire server. Expert changes recipes, so a world played in one mode does not translate to the other: things your group built become unobtainable or trivially cheap if you switch mid-run. Agree it up front, set it once, and leave it.

Be aware that your players' clients need to match what the server is running for the recipe book to make sense, so tell them which mode you picked when you invite them.

4 GB, which is FTB's own recommendation

FTB list 4 GB as both the minimum and the recommended figure for this pack, and that is what we set. It is the lowest recommendation of any pack we carry, and it is genuine rather than optimistic: 1.7.10 mods are far lighter than modern ones, and the pack is around 137 entries.

The caveat is that Java 8 handles memory differently than people expect. Adding a great deal more than the recommendation does not help here, and on this generation of Minecraft it often makes garbage collection pauses more noticeable rather than less.

Minecraft 1.7.10 is genuinely old

This is the oldest Minecraft version we carry, and it needs Java 8 specifically, which the installer selects for you. Practical consequences: there is no modern tooling for this version, mods from any later era are irrelevant, and the pack ships none of the modern conveniences like spark for profiling or FTB Chunks for claiming. If you need land protection on a 1.7.10 server, that is something you plan for rather than something the pack provides.

Worldgen and backups

This is a normal overworld pack with a lot of 1.7.10-era mod terrain and dimensions on top, so first-visit generation is a real cost. The pack ships no pregeneration tool and options are limited on this version, so keeping view distance modest and letting the group explore gradually matters more here than on newer packs. Back up regularly: a decade-old pack is stable, but the world represents a lot of hours.

Modes

Expert rewrites recipes

Normal and Expert are not difficulty settings. Pick one before you start, because a world does not translate.

RAM

4 GB, FTB's recommended spec

The lowest figure we carry, and a real one: 1.7.10 mods are far lighter than modern equivalents.

Era

No modern conveniences

No spark profiling and no FTB claim system on this version, so plan land protection yourself.
