FTB OceanBlock 2 opens with your escape pod in pieces on a planet that is nothing but ocean. There is no land, no rescue, and something under the water that does not want you there. It is a skyblock-shaped premise in that you begin with nothing and build a platform outward, but the fiction and the progression are doing much more work than that comparison suggests.

You scavenge debris, automate the basics, and build a power base on the surface. Then the pack turns downward. Going deep needs a pressurized diving suit, because the crushing depths will kill you otherwise, and the technology to survive them is the spine of the progression. Custom structures are scattered across the ocean to find, and the questline carries a genuine story about why you are stuck here.

For a server that gives you something the FTB skyblocks do not: a shared map. Everyone is on the same ocean, so exploring is a group activity and finding a structure is worth telling people about. It runs on NeoForge 1.21.1 and suits groups who want progression with a direction rather than a sandbox.

Hosting FTB OceanBlock 2

6 GB, which is FTB's own recommendation

FTB publish 6 GB as recommended for OceanBlock 2, with 4 GB as the minimum, and we set the recommended figure. For a group of around six that is a fair fit, helped by the fact that the world is mostly water and therefore cheap compared with a terrain-heavy overworld pack.

One shared ocean, not an island each

Worth knowing if you have run FTB Skies: OceanBlock 2 does not give each team its own dimension. Everyone shares one world, which changes how you plan the server. Bases need spacing so machine-heavy areas are not stacked on top of each other, and it is worth agreeing early roughly where people are building.

It also means claims matter for real reasons rather than as bookkeeping. FTB Chunks and FTB Teams ship with the pack, and the default that catches every FTB server out applies here too: force-loaded chunks tick only while a team member is online. Set force_load_mode to ALWAYS in the FTB Chunks server config if you want automation running overnight, editing the copy under world/serverconfig once the world exists.

What the load actually is

Ocean generates far more cheaply than varied terrain, so exploring costs less here than on a normal pack, and the pack ships no pregeneration mod. The cost lands on bases: machines, fluid systems and the structures people build out over the water. ServerCore is included, and spark is there when you need to know what is really happening:

/spark profiler --timeout 120

Java and updating

Minecraft 1.21.1 means Java 21, chosen for you at install. The pack is actively developed, so read the changelog before updating a world your group has invested in, take the backup the panel offers, and move everyone's client together.

RAM

6 GB, FTB's recommended spec

FTB's own published figure for the pack, with 4 GB as their listed minimum.

World

One ocean, shared by everyone

Unlike FTB Skies there is no dimension per team, so plan where bases go before people spread out.

Progression

Depth needs equipment

The crushing depths kill an unprepared player, so the diving suit gates the second half of the pack.
