DayZ modding does not work like Minecraft modding. There is no plugin folder you drop files into and no in-game mod menu. Every mod is a Steam Workshop folder your server pulls down with SteamCMD, and the order you list them in the startup line decides whether the server boots or dies in the first ten seconds. Get that part right and DayZ becomes the most malleable survival game on the market. Get it wrong and you spend a Saturday reading crash logs.
This is the list we would install on a fresh Chernarus server today, ordered the way it should actually load. The subscriber counts come from the Steam Workshop in August 2026, and they matter more than they look: in DayZ, a mod nobody uses is a mod nobody patched after the last game update.
One piece of timing before you start. DayZ Badlands, the Nasdara expansion, is scheduled for October 2026, and Bohemia has confirmed two things that touch this list directly: a rebuilding system that lets players restore and barricade real houses, and an official code lock that will be available on every map, not just the new one. Two entries below are about to get a vanilla competitor.
Frameworks first, or nothing else loads
CF, usually written out as Community Framework, sits at 4.9 million subscribers and is the closest thing DayZ has to a standard library. Community-Online-Tools requires it. BaseBuildingPlus requires it. MuchCarKey requires it. The DayZ-Expansion suite requires it plus Dabs Framework on top. If you install one thing today, install CF, and put it at the front of your mod list.
Dabs Framework, at 3.4 million, is the second pillar. It was last updated in May 2026, which is the reassuring part. Frameworks that go quiet break every time the game version moves.
DayZ Editor Loader (2.7 million) is the odd one out here because it does nothing on its own. It exists so your server can load custom buildings and map edits that somebody built in DayZ Editor. The moment you want a custom trader city or a rebuilt airfield, you need it. Install it early even if you have no map edits yet, because you will.
The load order rule is simple: frameworks, then map mods, then everything else.
Admin tools you want before the first player joins

VPPAdminTools (3.8 million, updated July 2026) is where most communities land. Teleport, spawn, tools for catching cheaters, and a proper permissions system so your moderators cannot hand out ghillie suits at 3am. Community-Online-Tools (2.2 million, also updated July 2026) covers similar ground with a cleaner permission model and a hard CF dependency.
Pick one. Running both is a common first-server mistake and leaves you with two overlapping keybinds and two permission systems to keep in sync.
Server_Information_Panel (1.4 million) is smaller and duller and you should still install it. It puts your rules, your Discord invite and your wipe schedule on a panel players can open in game. Every question it answers is a question your moderators stop getting asked.
Base building, and the code lock question

Code Lock has 4.3 million subscribers, the second highest number on this entire list, and it has not been updated since November 2024. That is not automatically a problem in DayZ, where a stable mod can sit untouched for years. It is still worth knowing before you build your server identity around it, because the official code lock arrives with Badlands in October and Bohemia has said it will work on the other maps too.
Our read: run Code Lock now if you want combination locks this month, but do not spend weeks tuning a raid economy around it. Revisit the decision in October.
BaseBuildingPlus (2.8 million) is the real overhaul, with wood, metal and concrete tiers and a snapping system that behaves itself. BuilderItems (3.0 million) is the lighter option and simply unlocks vanilla objects for building. Breachingcharge (2.3 million) is the other half of that equation. If you make bases tougher, raiders need a tool, or your map slowly fills up with untouchable compounds nobody can crack.
Quality of life your players notice in the first ten minutes

VanillaPlusPlusMap (2.5 million) gives players an in-game map that actually reads as terrain. It was last updated in 2020 and still works, which tells you how little that system has changed.
Ear-Plugs (2.1 million) drops the game audio a few steps so voice chat is usable inside a car. It sounds trivial. It is the difference between a five-person convoy and five people shouting.
Advanced Weapon Scopes (2.7 million) adds optics that sit inside vanilla balance instead of replacing it. WindstridesClothingPack (2.9 million) and MuchStuffPack (2.0 million) widen the loot table with clothing and gear without turning the server into a military dress-up game.
Unlimited Stamina (1.2 million) is the one to argue about. It makes a server friendlier for casual players and instantly less DayZ. Decide what your server is before you install it.
The heavy end: economy, vehicles and airdrops

Trader (2.3 million, the Dr Jones one) is still the default economy mod, and Banking (1.4 million) pairs with it so money survives death. Together they turn a survival server into a persistent-progression server, which is a bigger design decision than it looks on the install screen.
The DayZ-Expansion suite is the largest thing you can bolt on. Expansion-Core (2.4 million), Expansion-Licensed (2.3 million) and Expansion-Vehicles (1.6 million) were all updated in the last two months. You get vehicles, a map with markers, a party system and quests. It is closer to a total conversion than a mod, and it will argue with anything else that touches the same systems.
FlipTransport (3.0 million) and CarCover (1.5 million) are small vehicle sanity mods that pay for themselves. MuchCarKey (1.8 million) locks cars so the first player to find one does not own it for the rest of the wipe. Airdrop-Upgraded (1.4 million) gives geared players a reason to leave the treeline.
What this costs you on a rented server
Mods are RAM. A vanilla DayZ server is comfortable around 4 to 6 GB. A Trader plus Expansion plus custom-map server wants 8 GB or more, and the jump comes mostly from loot tables and object count rather than player slots. Budget for it before you install, not after the first lag complaint in your Discord.
One practical point people miss. Mods that add items need entries in your Central Economy files or those items will never spawn, which is a separate job from installing the mod. Our guide on raising loot on a DayZ server covers that side.
The mechanics of pulling Workshop content with SteamCMD, placing the keys and building the startup line are covered in how to install mods on a DayZ server. On a DayZ server from DoomHosting the mod list is a startup field rather than a config file you hand-edit, which keeps the part people usually get wrong, the load order, in plain sight.
Where to start
If this is your first modded server, install four things: CF, VPPAdminTools, VanillaPlusPlusMap and Server_Information_Panel. That gives you a server you can administer, that players can navigate, and that answers its own questions. Add base building next. Leave the economy suite until you know what kind of server you actually have.
Then check back in October. Nasdara is going to change some of these answers.
