A wipe is a server-wide reset that deletes progress so everyone starts from scratch. Facepunch forces monthly map wipes on official servers so no one gets so entrenched that new players can't compete. Community servers each set their own wipe cadence (weekly, biweekly, or custom).
Every first Thursday of the month at 2 PM ET (≈ 19:00 UTC), Facepunch ships the monthly update and forces official servers to wipe the map. Structures, storage and players are deleted — blueprints usually carry over unless it is also a BP-wipe month.
Every three months — first Thursdays of March, June, September and December — the monthly forced wipe also resets blueprints. Everyone loses their research progress, making it the most popular fresh-start wipe for groups and clans.
Rust Console Edition runs on its own schedule. Force wipes land on the last Thursday of each month at 2 PM ET, one full month behind the current PC build. Console servers also see quarterly BP wipes on the last Thursday of March, June, September and December.
Community servers pick their own schedule — most wipe weekly on Thursdays, some biweekly, a few daily for no-build-cost servers. Check the server description in the in-game browser or the owner's Discord; some hosts publish a wipe schedule page on their website.
In the 48 hours before a force wipe: finalize group rosters, agree on a starting location, pre-download any map mods or patches, clear your inventory of anything that will not carry, and be online at wipe time to grab prime beach real estate. Prime grids go fast.
