Every building block connected to a Tool Cupboard costs resources to maintain. At a full Tool Cupboard the upkeep is roughly 10 percent of each block's build cost per 24 hours, paid in the same resource used to build it: wood, stone, metal fragments, or high quality metal. The Tool Cupboard pulls these resources automatically.

No. Twig blocks have no upkeep cost, but they decay on their own and can be destroyed by anyone in a few hits, so twig is only used as temporary scaffolding while you upgrade. This calculator only counts Wood, Stone, Sheet Metal, and Armored blocks.

Upkeep gets more expensive as the Tool Cupboard empties. At a full cupboard you pay about 10 percent of build cost per day. Once it drops below half full the rate climbs toward 30 percent per day, so keeping the cupboard well stocked is cheaper over time.

Build smaller and avoid unnecessary blocks, since every block adds to the bill. Upgrade only the blocks that need to be strong and leave interior blocks at a lower grade. Large bases also pay a higher upkeep multiplier per block, so a compact base is far cheaper to maintain.

When the Tool Cupboard runs out of a resource, the blocks that need it start to decay. Wood decays fastest, then stone, sheet metal, and armored last. If you are offline for a long time, top up the cupboard so your base does not rot away before you return.
