To move an existing VEIN world, a singleplayer save or a backup, onto your dedicated server, you replace the server's save files over FTP. VEIN keeps saves in Vein/Saved/SaveGames, and your local game uses the same folder, so it is a copy-and-restart job.

Where VEIN saves live

  • On your dedicated server: Vein/Saved/SaveGames
  • On your PC (singleplayer): right-click VEIN in Steam, choose Manage, Browse Local Files, then open Vein/Saved/SaveGames

The save itself is the file (or files) inside that folder. VEIN is in Early Access and the save format has shifted between versions: current builds use server.save plus manifest.save, while older builds used a single Server.vns file. Always match whatever files your server already has in that folder.

Back up the server's current save first

Before overwriting anything, download a copy of the existing save:

  1. Stop the server from your DoomHosting control panel.
  2. Open the FTP details, connect with a client like FileZilla, and go to Vein/Saved/SaveGames.
  3. Download every file in that folder to a safe spot. If anything goes wrong, you can re-upload these.

Upload your world

  1. With the server stopped, open Vein/Saved/SaveGames on your PC (Steam, Manage, Browse Local Files).
  2. Note the file names your server uses in its SaveGames folder, for example server.save and manifest.save, or Server.vns on older builds.
  3. Upload your local save files into the server's Vein/Saved/SaveGames folder, replacing the server's files. Keep the names identical to what the server expects: if your server loads server.save, your uploaded save must be named server.save.
  4. Upload the whole set together. If your build uses server.save and manifest.save, upload both, or the world will not load.
  5. Start the server. Your uploaded world loads on boot.

Bring your settings across (optional)

Custom gameplay settings live in Engine.ini at Vein/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/. To keep tweaks from another setup, upload that file too, then restart.

Common issues

  • World did not change: the file name probably does not match what the server loads. Compare against the file the server created in SaveGames and rename to match exactly.
  • Server will not start after upload: you may have uploaded a partial save. Modern saves need both server.save and manifest.save together, so re-upload the full set, or restore the backup you took.
  • Corrupted or rolled-back world: a save uploaded while the server is running can be overwritten on shutdown. Always stop the server before uploading, and start it only after the upload finishes.
  • Version mismatch: a save from a newer game version may not load on an older server build, or the reverse. Keep your server on the version your save was made on.
