Windrose finally has a date to circle, or at least a season. On October 8, 2026, Kraken Express used the Triple-i Initiative showcase to reveal Windrose: Ashlands, the first major update since the game entered Early Access on April 14. The Windrose Ashlands release date is set for this winter, with no exact day announced yet. The same evening, the studio published the first "Voyage to Ashlands" dev blog, and it is a bigger deal than the trailer: the way ships are built and customized is being torn down and rebuilt.

If you run a Windrose server for your crew, that second part matters more than any new boss. Here is what is confirmed, what is still open, and what to do with your server before winter.

When Does Windrose Ashlands Release?

The official word is "this winter". Publisher Pocketpair repeated the same window in its announcement and gave no day or month. Kraken Express has also not published a dated roadmap, so treat any specific date you see on a fan site as a guess.

What we can say is that the studio is now in reveal mode. The dev blog calls itself the first of a series that will "regularly share more about what's coming in Ashlands", which usually means a few weeks of feature drops before a launch date is named. For context, Windrose sold over a million copies in its first six days and passed two million in its first month, so this update is landing on a large and very active player base.

What's in the Ashlands Update?

According to the trailer and the announcement coverage, Ashlands brings:

  • New main and side missions that continue the story beyond the current Archipelago.
  • New factions, on top of the ones already in the game.
  • A new ship you can command.
  • A new boss to take down.
  • An expanded map with new areas, including a long-abandoned Spanish colony.
  • A new biome, which the dev blog hints you will want to prepare your ship for before sailing out.
  • Improvements to combat, general gameplay and NPC behavior.

The latest patch, 0.10.0.9, was a small one that fixed cannonballs not dealing damage when they hit a ship's stern, sails or hull. That is a good sign the team is cleaning up naval combat ahead of a ship-focused update.

The Big Change: Ship Customization Is Being Rebuilt

Work in progress Galleon from the Windrose Ashlands development preview

Right now, two factions (Brethren of the Coast and Blackbeard's Crew) have their own versions of certain ships. Kraken Express says that system boxed them in: faction hulls and sails ate most of the visual variety, some exterior parts only worked on specific faction variants, and building a separate version of every ship for every faction would never scale.

So in Ashlands:

  • Faction-specific ship variants are removed. You pick a ship class, for example a Ketch, and customize it from the full pool of options for that class.
  • Exterior customization becomes mix and match. Visual parts that used to be locked to faction ships join a wider system, along with new pieces.
  • The crew and cannons get new systems, though the studio says those ideas need more time before it shares details.

The Galleon above was shown back in August as an early work in progress, and the studio was clear then that the final ship lineup may change.

What happens to the ships you already own?

This is the line every server owner should read twice. The existing faction ship variants will be removed, and the studio says it will explain the migration process separately once it is finalized. The promise so far: you will not lose progress, and any resources from dismantled ships will be fully refunded.

Your Ship Becomes a Second Base

Windrose Ashlands ship hold with storage shelves and cargo below deck

The part of the dev blog with the most gameplay impact is the hold. Today it is an empty room you walk through. In Ashlands you can install structures below deck, starting with a workbench and a cooking fire. The studio is also looking at extra storage containers next to the regular cargo hold. Those might not be reachable remotely through the Flagship tab the way ship inventory is, but they would add a lot of room for long voyages.

There will be decorative options too, and some modules may change how the ship itself performs. The idea is that you can kit out a ship for an expedition into the new biome, a trading run with maximum cargo, or a fight with rival captains.

Placing a structure on a designated building spot inside a Windrose ship hold

There is one deliberate limit: ships get a fixed number of designated building spots. No free-form building at sea. Kraken Express says ships are among the most technically complex entities in the game and already demanding on performance, and a free-form system on top would cost too much. As a host, we think that is the right call. Every ship in a shared world is simulated by the server, and a crew with three heavily built ships would otherwise be paying for it in tick rate.

What This Means for Your Windrose Server

Ashlands changes how existing ships are stored, so a little preparation goes a long way:

  • Back up the world before the update goes live. On a dedicated server, the world data lives under Saved/SaveProfiles/Default/RocksDB/0.10.0/Worlds/ in a folder named after your WorldIslandId (you can find the ID in ServerDescription_Persistent.json). Copy the whole folder, or take a full backup from your control panel.
  • Note your faction ships. Write down which faction variants your crew owns before the migration, so you can check the resource refund after updating.
  • Update the server and clients together. A server on the old build will keep players on the new build out. Update the server first, start it once to let it migrate the world, then invite the crew back.
  • Check the save folder after the update. The 0.10.0 folder name tracks the save format, so confirm which folder the updated server is reading before you delete anything.
  • Plan for a busier server. New missions, a new biome and fuller ships mean more for the server to simulate. Our Windrose RAM calculator gives you a starting point for your player count and world size.

If you are just starting a fresh world for the update, our Windrose dedicated server guide covers setup, and the best base locations guide is worth a look before the map grows.

Is Ashlands Worth Coming Back For?

For anyone who drifted away after the first few weeks, yes. A new biome, boss and story arc is the content side, but the ship rework is what changes how a crew plays together: a ship with a workbench, a cooking fire and real storage turns long voyages into something you plan around instead of a commute between islands. The open question is the migration of existing faction ships, and that is exactly the part to keep an eye on.
