Two builds landed in VEIN over the weekend, and both of them point at the same place: dedicated servers. Hotfix 7 went out on August 31, Hotfix 8 followed it almost immediately, and on September 1 the team published a VEIN News post that spends most of its length on networking, server frame rate and the map region that closes out 0.025.
That is a shift. VEIN patch notes usually lead with items, guns and buildings. This round leads with server FPS. If you host a VEIN server, it is the most relevant patch cycle the game has had since the 0.024 map expansion back in June.
Hotfix 7 and 8 are mostly server fixes
The two headline lines in the Hotfix 7 changelog are "drastically reduce rubberbanding in multiplayer" and "drastically improve dedicated server performance". Underneath them sits a list that reads like a host's wishlist:
- The server browser is faster, so your server surfaces sooner when players refresh.
- Zombies no longer forget the player during horde events, and general pathing got a pass.
- Fewer "stuck and failed to move" lines in dedicated server logs. That message is the one every VEIN host has watched scroll past for months, and each one represents AI work the server did for nothing.
- Empty servers stop doing pointless work: no music playback with zero players, and no autosave with zero players if your server is configured so time does not run on an empty world.
- VOIP fixes across the board. The handheld radio no longer beeps when it receives audio, and it sounds noticeably less tinny.
- Other players only show on the map for admins when "see all" is active, which closes a small but real information leak on PvP servers.
Hotfix 8 is tiny and you still want it. It fixes players with Windows Smart App Control being unable to launch the game at all, and it fixes Turkish and Chinese being swapped in the language list. It also pulls the screen reader support that Hotfix 7 added, because that support was what tripped Smart App Control in the first place. The team says it will come back as an opt-in toggle.

Server FPS went from 11 to 23
This is the number worth reading twice. The team benchmarked on a deliberately underpowered PC and took their test server from 11 FPS to 23 FPS.
Server FPS is not a graphics measurement. It is how many times per second the server steps the world: movement, AI, physics, and the state it pushes back out to every connected client. At 11 FPS the server sits roughly 90 milliseconds between frames before a single packet crosses the internet. At 23 that gap is closer to 43 milliseconds. That is why the rubberbanding fix and the frame rate work are one story rather than two. Your character stops snapping backwards because the server is finally answering fast enough to agree with your client.
Do not expect an exact doubling on your own machine. That figure came from one weak test box under one workload, and your result depends on player count, zombie count and how much built structure the world is carrying. The direction is what matters, and the direction is good.
There is a second-order effect worth noting too. The team wants to reuse what it learned here to raise the default zombie count in single player. If that lands, higher zombie counts on servers get more realistic as well, and that is the setting most hosts have been quietly turning down to buy back performance.

The remaining lag lives in inventories and vehicles
The dev post names inventory networking and vehicle networking as the two highest bandwidth consumers in the game, and Yan is working on both. That is a useful diagnostic for hosts. If your server still feels heavy after Hotfix 8, pay attention to when it happens. Four players tearing through a strip mall, or a convoy crossing the map, will hurt far more than the same four people walking across a field.
Ragdolling is in progress as well. Zombies will stop dying instantly when hit by a car and will instead get knocked over, slow the vehicle down and stand back up. That is more physics for the server to run every tick, so it is worth having headroom before 0.025 rather than scrambling for it after.
Mountain View, Owl's Head and Duane are done for 0.025
The new map region is finished. It sits inside Franklin County and adds three areas: Mountain View, Owl's Head and Duane. New winter textures came with it, along with a rideable sled and ski lifts, so this is clearly the snow side of the map. The team is also running a detailing pass over older areas like Redford while it plans the next expansion.
For hosts, a map expansion is a world change, and the team has not said whether existing saves carry cleanly into the new region. Take a full world backup before update day. If you have never moved world files around before, our guide on uploading a VEIN world covers the same paths in reverse.

What to do on your server this week
- Update to Hotfix 8, not 7. The launch bug in 7 locks out players with Smart App Control enabled, and they will read it as your server being broken.
- Re-baseline your performance settings. If you cut zombie counts or player slots to fight lag, try walking them back now and watch what the server does.
- Back up the world before 0.025 arrives.
- Recheck your mods. UE4SS-based mods break across builds more often than not, so run through our VEIN mod list once you have updated.
- If you are still tuning the basics, the VEIN server config generator and the getting started guide will get you a clean baseline.

The short version
VEIN's dedicated server has spent most of its life as the thing that runs the game rather than a thing anyone optimised. Hotfix 7 and 8 are the first cycle where that changed, and doubling server frame rate on weak hardware is the difference between a server that feels broken at six players and one that does not. It is not finished work, and the team says so plainly. It is still the best week a VEIN host has had in a while.
If you want somewhere to point that new headroom, our best base locations in VEIN roundup is a good place to start, and VEIN server hosting gets you a box that is not the bottleneck.
