Minecraft's second big drop of 2026 is here. Chaos Cubed (26.2) is out now on Java and Bedrock, and it is one of the most playful updates in years: a brand new cave biome, a bouncy block-eating mob, a stack of new building blocks, and the friends list finally landing on Java. Here is everything new, plus the one thing every server owner needs to check before updating.

Sulfur Caves: a new biome that wants you dead

The star of the update is the Sulfur Caves, a new underground biome layered with bright yellow sulfur and deep red cinnabar. Cave spiders lurk here instead of the usual spiders, and the whole place glows in a sickly yellow-green. On the surface these caves break through as sulfur springs in four different sizes, so you can spot one without even digging.

The new Sulfur Caves biome

It is gorgeous and hostile in equal measure. Pools of potent sulfur release a noxious gas at the surface that hits you with Nausea, and if that sulfur sits above magma or lava it forms erupting geysers that launch anything standing on them. Sulfur spikes grow from the ceiling and floor like dripstone, and the ones overhead fall and deal damage. Watch your step.

Sulfur Cubes: the bounciest mob in Minecraft

Meet the Sulfur Cube, the mob this whole update is named after. It is passive, it bounces around like a slime, and here is the wild part: interact with it while holding a block and it absorbs that block, taking on its properties. There are twelve archetypes in total. A cube that ate slime turns bouncy, honey makes it sticky, ice makes it slide, and a TNT cube can be primed with redstone or fire. The hot variant burns anything it touches.

Kill one and it splits into two smaller cubes. Feed a small cube slimeballs and it grows. Grow one big enough and you can scoop it up with a bucket (yes, Bucket of Sulfur Cube is a real item now) and carry your bouncy little chaos gremlin anywhere you like.

New blocks, a new music disc, and the friends list

Chaos Cubed is a building update too. Both sulfur and cinnabar come in full block families: base, polished, bricks, and chiseled, each with stairs, slabs, and walls. That is a whole new yellow-and-red palette to build with.

There is also a new music disc, "Bounce" by fingerspit, tucked into mineshaft chests inside the sulfur caves, plus five new ambient tracks for the biome.

The biggest quality-of-life win: the friends list has finally arrived on Java Edition. Open it from the title screen or the pause menu to see who is online, in a world, or offline, send and accept requests, and tune your privacy settings. It has been a Bedrock feature for years, so Java parity is long overdue and very welcome.

For the tech crowd, 26.2 also ships an experimental Vulkan renderer. Head to Video Settings and you will find a new Graphics API option (Default, Prefer Vulkan, Prefer OpenGL). It needs Vulkan 1.2 and uses a reversed depth buffer to cut down on Z-fighting. OpenGL stays the default for now, but it is a real step forward for performance on modern GPUs.

Running a server? Read this before you update

Here is the part most "what's new" posts skip. 26.2 raises the minimum Java version to Java SE 25. If your server is still on Java 21 or earlier, 26.2 will not even start. On DoomHosting this is a non-issue, our Minecraft servers already ship the right Java runtime, but anyone self-hosting needs to upgrade the JVM first.

A few more things to check before you hit update:

  • Plugins and mods need 26.2 builds first. Paper, Spigot, Fabric, and Forge all need a 26.2-compatible release, and so does every plugin or mod you run. Updating the server jar before your loader and plugins are ready is the number one reason a server refuses to boot after a drop. Wait for the green light on each one.
  • Back up your world. Always snapshot before a major version jump. The "Adventuring Time" advancement now requires visiting the sulfur caves, but more importantly a half-updated mod can corrupt a world on first load.
  • Clients must match. 26.2 uses protocol version 776, so players need to be on 26.2 to join a 26.2 server.
  • For admins: the Server Management Protocol moves to 3.0.0, and chat and command spam now have separate rate thresholds.

How to update on DoomHosting

On our panel it is quick: stop the server, switch to the 26.2 version (or bump your modpack and loader to their 26.2 build), and start it back up. Vanilla, Paper, Fabric, and Forge servers all update the same way. If you run plugins or mods, update those to their 26.2 versions in the same pass so everything boots clean the first time.

No Minecraft server yet? You can spin one up in under a minute on dedicated Ryzen 9 hardware with full FTP access, DDoS protection, and 24/7 support. Take a look at Minecraft server hosting and you could be exploring the sulfur caves with friends tonight.

Chaos Cubed is live right now. Update, back up, and go bounce some cubes. For the full technical changelog, see the Java Edition 26.2 notes on the Minecraft Wiki.
