Minecraft Nether Portal Calculator

Minecraft uses an 8:1 coordinate ratio between the Overworld and the Nether. Traveling 1 block in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld (X and Z axes only — the Y axis is unchanged). Enter your current coordinates in either dimension and the calculator returns the exact matching coordinates where you should build your linked portal.

Mojang designed the Nether as a shortcut dimension — walking distance in the Nether counts 8× in the Overworld. This makes the Nether perfect for long-distance travel: a 2,000-block trip in the Overworld only takes 250 blocks in the Nether. To find the matching coordinate, divide Overworld X and Z by 8 (when going to the Nether) or multiply Nether X and Z by 8 (when going back).

No — the Y axis (height) is NOT scaled between dimensions. If your Overworld portal is at Y=64, your linked Nether portal should also be at Y=64 (or as close as possible given Nether terrain). Only the X and Z axes use the 8:1 ratio.

A portal in one dimension links to a portal in the other within a 128-block search radius (in Overworld coordinates). When you step through, the game first looks for an existing portal at the scaled coordinates; if none exists within 128 blocks, it generates a new portal automatically — often in a terrible spot. To guarantee a clean link, always build both portals manually at the exact coordinates this calculator returns.

The 8:1 ratio is identical in Java and Bedrock Edition. The linking logic and search-radius rules are also the same. This calculator works for both editions.
