Minecraft MOTD Editor

MOTD stands for 'Message of the Day'. It's the text that appears below your server's name in the Minecraft multiplayer server list. It consists of up to two lines and can include colors and formatting like bold, italic, underline, and strikethrough to make your server stand out.

To change your MOTD, edit the 'motd=' line in your server.properties file. Use our editor above to create your formatted MOTD, then copy the server.properties format output and paste it as the value. Restart your server (or reload with some plugins) for changes to take effect.

Minecraft uses formatting codes prefixed with the section sign (§) followed by a character. Colors range from §0 (black) to §f (white), covering 16 colors total. Formatting codes include §l (bold), §o (italic), §n (underline), §m (strikethrough), and §k (obfuscated/magic text). Many plugins also accept the ampersand (&) as an alternative prefix.

A Minecraft MOTD can have up to two lines. Each line can technically hold up to 45 characters of visible text (not counting formatting codes). The total MOTD including formatting codes is stored as a single string in server.properties, with \n separating the two lines.

If your colors aren't showing, check these common issues: 1) Make sure you're using the correct format for your setup — server.properties uses \u00A7 escape codes, while most plugins use & or § directly. 2) Ensure there are no extra spaces or characters around the formatting codes. 3) Some hosting panels have their own MOTD editors that may override the server.properties value. 4) After editing, restart your server fully — a reload may not always pick up MOTD changes.
