Taming effectiveness (TE) starts at 100% and drops with every food the creature eats and every point of torpor damage. Higher TE at the end means more bonus levels on the tamed creature. Better food (kibble) and a fast knockout keep TE high, which is why kibble tames come out at a much higher level than berry or raw meat tames.

Kibble is almost always the best. It has high taming affinity, so the creature needs far fewer bites, which keeps taming effectiveness high and cuts the taming time. Prime Meat (or Crops for herbivores) is the next best. Raw Meat and berries work but give low effectiveness and take much longer. The table above ranks every food this creature accepts.

Torpor drains faster the higher the creature's level, and long tames with weak food keep it unconscious for a long time, so you burn a lot of narcotics. Using kibble shortens the tame and cuts the narcotics needed. The figure shown is the maximum to keep the creature fully knocked out for the entire taming duration.

The taming speed multiplier matches your server's TamingSpeedMultiplier. Official servers run at 1. Raising it means fewer food items and a faster tame. On your own server you can set any rate you like, so a level 150 creature that takes hours on official can tame in minutes at a higher multiplier.

When a creature is tamed above 0% effectiveness it gains bonus levels on top of its wild level, up to half the wild level at 100% effectiveness. So a level 150 creature tamed at 100% TE arrives at level 225, while the same creature tamed with raw meat might only gain a handful of levels. This is why players chase high effectiveness.
