Getting Started with Your Vintage Story Server
Welcome to DoomHosting. Your Vintage Story server is provisioned and ready โ this guide walks you through your first 10 minutes: connecting, picking your world settings, and installing your first mod from the official ModDB.
1. Find your server address
Open the DoomHosting panel and click your Vintage Story server. The connection address is shown at the top of the page โ it looks like vs-eu-01.doomhosting.com:42420 (the default Vintage Story port is 42420).
Copy the full hostname:port string. That is what you will paste into the game.
2. Connect from Vintage Story
- Launch Vintage Story.
- Click Play โ Connect to Server.
- Paste the server address into the box and click Connect.
That is it for vanilla. If you set a password under the server config, the game will prompt you for it the first time.
3. Tune your world (before anyone joins)
Most server config lives in serverconfig.json in your server root. The settings you will care about first:
- WorldName โ what shows in the server browser
- Seed โ controls terrain generation. Leave blank for random.
- WorldClimate โ
realistic(default, day/night and seasons),patchy, orworldlike - PlayStyle โ
surviveandbuild(default),exploration, orwildernesssurvivalfor hardcore players - MaxPlayers โ keep at 16 unless you have plenty of RAM (see the Vintage Story RAM Calculator for sizing).
Edit the file via the File Manager in the panel, save, then click Restart for changes to take effect.
4. Install a mod from ModDB
Vintage Story uses the official ModDB at mods.vintagestory.at. Mods are just .zip files dropped into the Mods folder.
The fast way on DoomHosting:
- In the panel, open Mods in the left sidebar.
- Search the ModDB catalogue, click Install on the mod you want, restart the server.
The manual way (for mods not in the catalogue, or specific versions):
- Download the
.zipfrommods.vintagestory.at. - Open File Manager โ
data/Mods(create it if it does not exist). - Upload the
.zipfile as-is โ do not extract it. - Restart the server.
Players will need to install the same mods locally to join. Vintage Story does not auto-sync mods to clients like some games do.
5. Make a backup before you do anything risky
Before installing major mods or testing config changes, take a backup from the panel's Backups tab. Restores are one click and your world is exactly as it was.
