Strange Loop Games has published the first preview of Eco Update 14, the Garbage and Recycling Update, and the playtest branch is already live on Steam. It is the biggest environmental-systems change since pollution first shipped: crafting recipes now produce byproducts, water needs treatment, pipes route through walls, and a new Recycling profession is designed to turn all the mess back into resources.

If you run an Eco server, this is the one to test on staging before it lands. Update 14 changes how machines interact with the environment on a fundamental level, and older worlds will need adjustments to keep working.

What's Coming in Update 14

The headline of Update 14 is a full rework of the byproduct and pollution loop, but Strange Loop also snuck in a piping rework, a desalinator, modular vehicles, and "multiple dozen" quality-of-life improvements driven by player feedback. It's a proper feature update, not a maintenance drop.

The four buckets from the dev blog:

  • Garbage and Recycling: byproduct blocks with different pollution profiles, still containing recoverable resources
  • New liquids and improved piping: fluids you need to filter, plus pipes that route directly through walls
  • A new Recycling profession: the intended counterweight to industrial waste
  • Reworked modular vehicles: for storing and transporting the new byproduct classes

The Garbage and Recycling System

Eco Update 14 garbage and recycling byproducts scene

Update 14 introduces byproducts to the crafting process. Different production chains generate different waste blocks, each with its own pollution type (air, ground, water) and its own environmental cost. The catch: those blocks still contain valuable materials.

That's where the Recycling profession comes in. Instead of dumping waste and eating the pollution hit, a recycling-focused player can extract usable resources back out of the byproducts, softening the environmental blow while keeping the material loop closed. Combined with the reworked modular vehicles, waste management stops being an afterthought and becomes its own economic tier.

On a server, expect the mid-game economy to shift meaningfully. Recycling jobs will need players, and the pollution readings on your ecosystem panel will look different than they did in Update 13.

New Liquids and Reworked Piping

Pollution now leaks into liquids as well as into the air and ground. Machines that pull water from an ocean will not run in Update 14. They need fresh water. If your build isn't on a river, you'll need a desalinator to convert salt water into something machines will actually accept. Input and output fluids can both be filtered so a bad neighbour doesn't pollute your whole valley.

Eco Update 14 x-ray overlay showing pipes routed through constructed blocks

The other quiet win here is the piping rework. Pipes can be placed directly into constructed blocks, so no more chewing holes through your walls to route fluid. An x-ray overlay appears when you're holding a pipe, showing everything already routed behind the walls. It's the kind of small change that stops being small once you've replumbed a factory.

Quality of Life Improvements

Strange Loop lists "multiple dozen" QoL tweaks, most of them from the community feedback tracker. A few highlighted in the preview:

  • Pick which items in a tag get used for a specific crafting recipe (no more surprise use of your rare wood)
  • Sort storages by name with one action
  • Hide fuel storages from the storage view
  • One-key transfer to top up only the items a storage already contains from your inventory
  • Buy the maximum you can afford in a store based on your currency and free storage space

None of these are marquee features, but together they cut down on the tedious inventory-shuffling that eats an evening on a busy server. Player feedback is going straight into shipped fixes, which is a good sign heading into Update 14.

Playtest Is Live Now

You can jump on the playtest branch today: right-click Eco in your Steam library, Properties, Betas, select "playtest". Strange Loop recommends joining the official playtest server and the Eco Discord to report issues in the #playtest channel.

The dev team is explicit that playtest builds are not stable. Bugs, placeholders, and half-finished art are expected. Treat it as a staging environment, not a live server.

What This Means for Your Server

For anyone hosting an Eco server, this is the checklist to run through before Update 14 goes stable:

  • Stand up a playtest server on the side. Update 14 changes machine behaviour deeply. Make sure your favourite mods and your economy config still work before you flip the live server.
  • Back up your savegame. Strange Loop points out that older worlds can be loaded in Update 14, but doing so is unsupported. Copy Steam/steamapps/common/Eco/Server/Storage (or the equivalent path in your Pterodactyl file manager) before you touch anything.
  • Expect broken buildings on migrated worlds. Pipes no longer count as building material, so any room that uses pipes as part of its enclosure will not register as a room until the pipes are replaced.
  • Prepare for salt water. Machines drawing from an ocean will stop working in Update 14 until the water is desalinated. If your industrial zone is coastal, that's an early to-do.
  • Warn your players about modules. Modules will be removed from all crafting tables during migration, converted to their new equivalents, and dropped into the void storage. Nothing is lost, but players will be confused if you don't tell them where to look.

For a fresh Update 14 world, none of this applies. Starting on the new version is the smoothest path, and it's the option Strange Loop is actively recommending.

When Does Update 14 Release?

Strange Loop hasn't committed to a date yet. The dev blog states that "depending on the results of the playtest, the release date of Update 14 will be announced shortly." Translation: a stable release is close, but they want to see how the playtest branch holds up first. Expect the announcement in the next few weeks.

If you want to be ready the day it drops, run the playtest on a spare server now, log issues in the Discord, and get your migration plan written before the stable branch lands.

Host Your Eco Server with DoomHosting

If you're picking up Update 14 and want a clean staging environment to test on, DoomHosting's Eco servers are built for it: instant setup, full FTP access to your Server/Storage folder for backups, and 24/7 support if a playtest branch decides to stop cooperating at 2 AM. Spin up a playtest instance alongside your live world, prove the migration works, and swap over when Update 14 ships stable.

The Garbage and Recycling Update is shaping up to be the most significant environmental-systems change in years for Eco. Play it early on the playtest branch, get your feedback into the Discord, and be ready when the stable build lands.
