Bohemia Interactive dropped the 1.29 Road to Badlands update onto the DayZ Experimental branch on July 1, 2026. This is an extra content pass sitting on top of the base 1.29 patch, seeded with assets from the upcoming DayZ Badlands expansion. The name is deliberate: 1.30 is already reserved for the Badlands map (Nasdara) itself, so this is your first hands-on with the new weapons, loot, and event dressing before the full expansion lands.

The experimental window is the usual 2 to 4 weeks. That means Stable across PC and consoles is realistic anywhere from mid-July to late July 2026. If you host a DayZ server, this is the window to test, capture your community's feedback, and stage your update plan.

Release Date and Branch Status

  • Experimental (PC and consoles): live now, since July 1, 2026
  • Stable release window: 2-4 weeks after Experimental drop, so approximately mid to late July 2026
  • Feedback tracker: Bohemia moved to a new system at report.bistudio.com/projects/dayz. Bug reports for 1.29 Road to Badlands go there, not the old tracker

SCR-17 Battle Rifle: The Crown Jewel

DayZ SCR-17 battle rifle scoped from a water tower over an airfield

The headline addition is the SCR-17, a .308 modular battle rifle with a 20-round magazine that has been on the community wishlist for years. It ships in two buttstock configurations, a default stock and a precision stock, putting it in the same versatility class as the LAR. Every western optic in the game mounts to it, and the update adds new non-magnifying Holo Sights that also cross-fit onto other western firearms already in the loot pool.

Two colorways exist: a default tan version that spawns broadly, and a black variant reserved for Sakhal. That kind of map-locked spawn is worth flagging on your server rules page before players start asking why the tan is more common on Chernarus and Livonia.

What server owners should know

  • The Holo Sight is a cross-compatible attachment. If you run a loot-economy mod (CET/central economy tweaks), review your types.xml entries for optic pools, since old presets will not include it.
  • .308 is already a chambered caliber in the vanilla loot pool, so ammo balance does not shift, but the SCR-17's 20-round magazine plus modular optics makes it the new default long-range weapon for geared PvP squads. Expect the Tier 3-4 loot centers on your server to see fresh traffic.

Convoy Events Replaced with Nasdara Wrecks

Every convoy event asset has been swapped out for the wrecks Bohemia built for Nasdara. The dynamic-location logic is unchanged (same spawn table, same rough tier), but the vehicles you find on the crash sites are now the Badlands set instead of the old prefabs. Chernarus and Livonia will see the new convoys; Sakhal, which lacks a road-based analogue, gets its own unique loot pass to compensate.

For community servers with custom event loot, this means your convoy overrides need a compatibility check when 1.29 hits Stable. The scripts referencing the old wreck prefab names may miss, and empty convoy loot piles are a fast way to burn community trust after an update night.

New Headwear, Backpack, and Vest

Continuing the 1.29 cosmetic drop, Road to Badlands adds a tanker helmet and a military cap in multiple color variants, plus a combat backpack and a plate carrier vest dressed in Nasdara desert camo. These are pool-additions, not replacements, so your existing headwear loot table is unaffected, but if you run a hardcore server that whitelists spawnable items, you will need to add the new class names before players complain about seeing them on YouTube but not on your server.

Bug and Exploit Mitigations

Beyond content, Bohemia knocked out a batch of the more painful 1.29 issues. The ones most relevant to admins:

  • Firearm zeroing fix on Xbox keyboard-and-mouse servers (a lingering issue since 1.29 dropped)
  • Stamina not returning after weighted items are dropped, a well-known combat exploit
  • Stash digging blocked next to player-built walls, a genuine bug rather than intended behavior, and one of the most reported issues on private hives running base-building mods

The full change log lives on the DayZ forums under the Experimental Update 1.29 patch thread. Andres from the Bohemia community team confirmed the report tracker migration in the announcement. If you were sitting on tickets in the old system, they need to move.

What This Means for Your Server

Use the Experimental window well. A rushed Stable-day update is where servers lose players.

  • Take a full snapshot before you point at the 1.29 Stable branch. On our Pterodactyl panel that is a one-click backup on the Files tab, but the same rule applies to a self-hosted box. If your mods break, you want a rollback in minutes not hours.
  • Test your mod pack against Experimental now. DayZ mods on Workshop tend to soft-break on version bumps, and CF Tools, VPPMap, and Expansion are the usual suspects. Update authors typically push compatible releases inside the Experimental window.
  • Announce the SCR-17 to your community. Servers that stay quiet on new-weapon patches lose engagement to competitors that post a Discord banner within a day.
  • Re-tune your loot spawns for the convoy overhaul. If you run economy tweaks, ensure the new wreck prefabs are referenced. Empty crash sites read as broken servers.
  • Plan for a player spike. Every major DayZ patch pulls lapsed players back for a week. If you run near your slot cap, this is when to bump RAM.

Is 1.29 Road to Badlands Worth Coming Back For?

As a straight content patch it is generous, with a genuinely new battle rifle, a new optic class, cosmetics, and a convoy overhaul. But the real story is what it signals: Bohemia has enough of Nasdara built and testable to bleed assets into the base game while polishing the expansion itself. If you have been holding off updating your server hardware for the DayZ Badlands launch, Road to Badlands is your low-risk dress rehearsal for that day.
