Satisfactory Best Base Locations 2026: Best Starting Location in 1.2

The best Satisfactory base locations in 2026: which of the four starting areas to pick in 1.2, where to build your megabase, and what a dedicated server locks in.

The best starting location in Satisfactory for most groups is the Rocky Desert: iron, copper and limestone a short walk from the HUB, coal close enough for early power, and the ocean on its doorstep for water. First-time pioneers who want the flattest ground should take the Grass Fields. Experienced players chasing pure nodes go Northern Forest, and anyone who already knows the game and wants endless flat space picks the Dune Desert.

That is the short answer. The longer one matters more if you play with friends on a dedicated server, because Satisfactory 1.2 changed what "best base location" even means, and the server locks some of these choices the moment the save is created.

Choose Your Start as a Group, Because the Server Locks It In

On a dedicated server nobody picks a spawn from the main menu. The starting area is chosen once, in the Create Game tab of the Server Manager, together with the session name that becomes your save. After that, every pioneer who joins drops into the same area. The default player limit is four, so that is four people living with one decision.

Update 1.2 raised the stakes. The new Game Modes settings (cost multipliers, Resource Node Randomization, node purity and a shareable World Seed) are picked when a save is created and cannot be changed afterwards. Agree on the start and the rules before anyone claims the server. If your group wants Game Modes settings that the server's Create Game flow does not offer, create the save in single-player with those settings and upload it through the Server Manager. The save keeps its start and its rules.

The good news: a bad start is not a life sentence. The HUB can be dismantled and rebuilt somewhere else, and it keeps every upgrade and milestone. Plenty of groups start easy and move the whole operation later.

Rocky Desert: The Best All-Round Starting Location

The game labels the Rocky Desert "suitable for first-time pioneers", and that undersells it. The terrain is nearly as flat as the Grass Fields, iron, copper and limestone sit close to the HUB, coal has been nearby since 1.0, and the sea is right there when your Coal Generators start asking for water. Caterium, sulfur and quartz are all reachable without a long trek, which carries you comfortably into the mid game.

The one weakness is biomass. There is less leafy growth to chainsaw than in the greener starts, so plan to move your early power onto coal sooner rather than feeding Biomass Burners for hours.

For a group of three or four, this is the start we recommend. Everyone gets a useful job from minute one, and nobody spends the first evening laying foundations to level a hillside.

Grass Fields: The Easiest Start for First-Time Pioneers

The Grass Fields are the flattest start on the map and the game's own pick for newcomers. Iron, copper and limestone surround the HUB, biomass is everywhere, and there is enough open ground to lay out a messy first factory and a tidy second one.

The catch shows up around Tier 3. Water is scarce nearby, and Coal Generators drink a lot of it, so the classic Grass Fields moment is a long pipeline or a move toward the coast. The nodes also lean normal and impure rather than pure. It is a comfortable place to learn the game, not the place most groups want to be at 200 hours.

Northern Forest and Dune Desert: Harder Starts That Pay Off

Satisfactory pioneer scanning in a narrow rocky canyon

Northern Forest is rated for experienced pioneers and it earns that. The terrain is steep and broken, so you build on foundations far more than on the ground. In exchange you get pure iron, pure copper, limestone and coal close together, with crude oil further to the northeast. Groups who enjoy stacked, vertical factories love it.

Dune Desert is labelled "recommended for advanced pioneers", mostly because the early resources are more spread out. What you get back is huge flat space, very common coal, a lake above the waterfall that supplies water without much pumping, and caterium and sulfur within reach. It is the start that scales best into one giant factory, which is exactly why veterans pick it.

Where Should You Build Your Megabase Later?

Most long-running saves outgrow their starting area. These are the spots groups relocate to or fill with satellite factories:

  • Where the Northern Forest, Rocky Desert and Crater Lakes meet. A wide variety of nodes, many of them pure, and open terrain around them. The community's favourite all-purpose megabase site for a reason.
  • Dune Desert. Flat, light on hostile fauna, coal everywhere. The easiest place to build something enormous and tidy.
  • Spire Coast. Oil, sulfur and a coastline for water, which makes it a natural home for plastic, rubber and fuel.
  • Blue Crater. Three nitrogen gas spots close together, feeding Nitric Acid, Cooling Systems and Rocket Fuel. Hostile creatures make it a place for a walled outpost, not a front garden.
  • Swamp and the Red Jungle coast. Bauxite, plus the Swamp's uranium in the cave behind the waterfall. Build an outpost, ship the output out by train or truck, and do not try to live there.

That last point is really the late-game rule: one central base fed by outposts beats hunting for a single spot that has everything. Trains, drones and the Fluid Trucks added in 1.2 exist to make exactly that work.

Does 1.2 World Randomization Change the Best Base Location?

Yes, if you turn it on. Every location above assumes the default node layout. With Resource Node Randomization set to Random, or purity shuffled, the geography stays the same but the ore underneath does not. A Rocky Desert start can land you next to impure nodes and no coal at all.

On a randomized world, pick your start for terrain and water, then spend the first hour scanning before you place anything permanent. The resource-rich presets make almost any start workable. And because the World Seed is visible and shareable, you can test a seed in single-player before committing your group's server to it.

Does Base Location Affect Server Performance?

Less than people think. The dedicated server simulates every machine, belt and train on the map every tick, whether anyone is standing next to it or not. Moving your factory across the map does not make it cheaper to run.

What location changes is the client side. A megabase packed into one view is heavy to render for whoever stands in it, while spread-out outposts are lighter on each player's GPU but add more train and vehicle traffic. Server load follows the size of the factory, not where it sits. The server favours high single-core speed, and its RAM grows with the save, not mainly with player count. Our Satisfactory RAM calculator estimates that from save size and players, and our Satisfactory dedicated server guide covers ports, claiming the server and autosaves.

Host Your Satisfactory Server with DoomHosting

A factory your group spends 300 hours on should be online whenever any of you want to play, not only when the host's PC is switched on. DoomHosting's Satisfactory servers run on Ryzen 9 hardware with instant setup, full FTP access to your saves, DDoS protection and 24/7 support. Pick your start together, create the game, and the factory keeps humming between sessions.
