What is a Valheim world seed?

The seed is the text string Valheim uses to generate a world's terrain, biomes and boss locations. Two worlds created with the same seed on the same world generation version produce the same map. It is stored in the world's .fwl file, which is why it can be read back out even if you never wrote it down.

Why are there two seeds shown?

The text seed is what you type into the Seed field in game. Valheim then turns it into a 32-bit number, and that number is what actually drives world generation. Both are stored in the .fwl. If you want to recreate your map, use the text seed. The number is only useful for tools and bug reports.

Is my world file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is opened with the browser's own file API and parsed on your device. Nothing is sent to us and nothing is stored. You can load this page, disconnect from the internet, and it still works.

What is the difference between the .fwl and .db files?

A world is two files sharing one name. The .db is the large save holding terrain, buildings and creatures. The .fwl is a small metadata file holding the world name, both seeds, the world version and the world modifiers. This tool only reads the .fwl.

Does this work for a dedicated server world?

Yes. Dedicated servers keep the same .fwl and .db pair in their world folder. On a DoomHosting Valheim server, open File Manager in the control panel, download the .fwl and drop it here.

Can I change the seed of an existing world?

No. The seed is fixed when the world is generated, and editing it in the .fwl would not regenerate the terrain already stored in the .db. To play a different seed you create a new world. You can still change a world’s modifiers at any time with our Valheim World Modifier Editor.

Where to find your .fwl file

Every Valheim world is a pair of files: a .db holding the terrain and buildings, and a small .fwl holding the name, seed and modifiers. You want the .fwl.

Valheim 1.0 (world folder)

Since Valheim 1.0 each world is a folder named after the world inside worlds_local. The file you want is _main.N.fwl2 in that folder, where N is the highest number present. Older backups are the .fwl.old files beside the folder.
