What's the difference between a Bedrock server and a Java server?

They run two different editions of Minecraft that cannot connect to each other. The Bedrock server is for console, mobile and Windows-app players and runs as a native binary. The Java server is for the standalone PC edition and runs on the Java runtime. Pick the one that matches the edition your players use: a Bedrock client cannot join a Java server, and vice versa.

Can I use Add-ons and behaviour packs on a Bedrock server?

Yes. The Bedrock Dedicated Server supports resource packs and behaviour packs (Add-ons). Drop them into the resource_packs and behavior_packs folders and reference them in the world's world_resource_packs.json and world_behavior_packs.json files. Bedrock does not use Java-style plugins or mods.

Does the Bedrock server support cross-play?

Yes. Bedrock is one shared edition across Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, iOS, Android and the Windows app, so players on any of those platforms can join the same Bedrock server. Cross-play with the Java edition is not supported because they are separate editions.

What is the Bedrock Dedicated Server?

The Bedrock Dedicated Server is the official server software Mojang publishes for the Bedrock edition of Minecraft, the version that runs on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, mobile and the Windows app. Unlike the Java server it's a native binary, not a Java JAR, so there's no JVM to install. It ships as a single zip with the server executable and default config files. Every download button here links directly to minecraft.net, so you always get the exact binary Mojang published.

When should I use Bedrock?

Use the Bedrock Dedicated Server if your players are on consoles, phones, tablets or the Windows app, because those clients can only join Bedrock servers. Bedrock supports cross-play across all those platforms. If your players are on the Java edition (the standalone PC version) you want the Java server instead, see the Java downloads link below. Java and Bedrock servers are not compatible: a client can only join a server of its own edition.
