Here is the real list.","Admin on a Valheim dedicated server is a short list of eight commands: `kick`, `ban`, `unban`, `banned`, `save`, `setworldmodifier`, `setworldpreset` and `resetworldkeys`. `devcommands`, `spawn`, `fly` and the rest of the cheat menu are not on that list and do not work on a rented server, whoever you put in `adminlist.txt`. Here is what admin really gives you, how to give it to yourself, and what to reach for instead of the cheats.

## Cheats do not work on a dedicated server

This is the part that costs people an evening, so it goes first.

Valheim has one console, opened with F5, but two very different sets of commands sit behind it. `devcommands` and everything it unlocks (`spawn`, `fly`, `god`, `nocost`, `killall`, `tod`, `event`) run in single-player and in a locally hosted world only. In both of those cases your own game client is the host, so it can change the world however you ask it to.

A dedicated server is a separate process on separate hardware, and it does not accept those commands. Adding your SteamID64 to `adminlist.txt` does not change it. Type `devcommands` while connected to a rented server and nothing switches on, so `spawn Wood 50` after it does nothing either.

Nearly every Valheim console video was recorded on a local world, where every command works, which is why so many people arrive expecting the same on a server. If you want to fly around and spawn gear, do it in single-player. On a server you get the eight admin commands below, plus the world modifiers, and those cover most of what people actually wanted.

## The commands admin actually gives you

| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| `kick [name/ip/userID]` | Kicks the named player from the server. |
| `ban [name/ip/userID]` | Bans the named player. The ban is written to `bannedlist.txt`. |
| `unban [name/ip/userID]` | Removes a ban. |
| `banned` | Prints the full list of banned players. |
| `save` | Forces the world to save right now. |
| `setworldmodifier [name] [value]` | Sets one world modifier. The names are combat, deathpenalty, resources, raids and portals, for example `setworldmodifier portals casual`. |
| `setworldpreset [name]` | Applies a whole preset at once: normal, casual, easy, hard, hardcore, immersive or hammer. |
| `resetworldkeys` | Resets every world modifier back to default. Boss progression keys are not touched. |

Every one of these is typed with **no leading slash**. `kick Bjorn` works, `/kick Bjorn` does not, and that missing detail is the most common reason a fresh admin thinks the server is ignoring them.

The full searchable reference, covering every console, admin and cheat command with a spawn builder for your single-player world, is our [Valheim console commands tool](/tools/valheim-commands).

## Give yourself admin in the panel

Admin is granted by SteamID64, one per line in `adminlist.txt`. You do not have to touch the file yourself: the **Player Manager** tab writes it for you.

![The Player Manager tab in the DoomHosting panel with the Valheim admin list, adding a player by SteamID](https://cdn.doomhosting.com/help/valheim/valheim-admin-players.webp)

1. Open your server in the [DoomHosting control panel](/gamepanel) and go to **Player Manager**.
2. In the **Admins** card, paste a SteamID64 or a Steam profile link.
3. Click **Add**. The player appears with their Steam name and avatar, so you can confirm you added the right person before anyone logs in.
4. Restart the server from the power controls in the header.

![The Admins card in the panel's Player Manager, with a SteamID64 pasted into the field beside the Add button and the Bans and Allowlist cards below it](https://cdn.doomhosting.com/help/valheim/valheim-admin-add-steamid.webp)

That last step matters. Valheim only re-reads the list on its own schedule, so a player added while the server is running may not have admin until the next refresh. A restart applies it immediately and takes well under a minute.

Admin gives that player the commands listed above and nothing else. It does not unlock cheats on a dedicated server, whatever you read about the role elsewhere.

### Finding your SteamID64

A SteamID64 is 17 digits and always starts with `7656`. Two ways to get yours:

- Open your Steam profile in a browser. If the address looks like `steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198012345678`, the number at the end is the SteamID64.
- If you set a custom profile URL, the address is `steamcommunity.com/id/yourname` and the number is not visible. Paste that link straight into the Player Manager instead. The panel resolves it to the SteamID64 for you.

The short friend code from the Steam overlay is a different number and will not work.

### Editing adminlist.txt by hand

If you would rather work in the file, it lives here:

```
/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/adminlist.txt
```

The folder name starts with a dot, so some SFTP clients hide it until you turn on hidden files. Put one SteamID64 per line, save, and restart the server.

## Where you type the commands

Admin commands are typed in Valheim's own console while you are connected to the server, not in your browser. Press F5 in game to open it. Valheim only enables that console when the game is launched with the `-console` option, which you set in Steam under **Properties**, then **Launch Options**.

The **Console** tab in the panel is the server's own output. It is where you watch the server boot, confirm it came back up after a restart and read the lines it prints while running.

## What to use instead of the cheats

People usually want cheats for two things: making the game easier and changing how much stuff drops. Both are supported on a dedicated server, properly, through world modifiers.

As an admin you can set them live:

```
setworldpreset hard
setworldmodifier resources more
```

The graded modifiers and their values:

| Modifier | Values |
|---|---|
| `combat` | normal, veryeasy, easy, hard, veryhard |
| `deathpenalty` | normal, casual, veryeasy, easy, hard, hardcore |
| `resources` | normal, muchless, less, more, muchmore, most |
| `raids` | normal, none, muchless, less, more, muchmore |
| `portals` | normal, casual, hard, veryhard |

You can also do all of this without being in game at all. The **Modifiers** tab in the panel sets the same modifiers and presets as server launch arguments, which means they survive restarts and apply to everyone without anyone having to be an admin. That tab also carries the toggles Valheim stores in the world file itself: `nobuildcost`, `playerevents`, `passivemobs` and `nomap`. Note that `nobuildcost` is the closest thing a dedicated server has to the `nocost` cheat, and it is a supported setting rather than a cheat.

Two more routes worth knowing:

- Resource rates have their own guide, with the values explained: [how to change the resource drop rate](/help/articles/how-to-change-resource-drop-rate-valheim-server).
- To edit a world you have not uploaded yet, our [Valheim world modifier editor](/tools/valheim-world-modifier-editor) opens a `.fwl` file in your browser, changes the modifiers and gives it back. The save never leaves your device.

## Bans, unbans and the allowlist

Bans are a file too. `ban` writes the player into `bannedlist.txt`, `banned` prints what is in it and `unban` takes an entry back out. The same three lists appear in the Player Manager, so you can manage them while the server is offline and nobody is in game to run a command:

- **Admins** is `adminlist.txt`.
- **Bans** is `bannedlist.txt`.
- **Allowlist** is `permittedlist.txt`. Add players to lock the server down to just them plus your admins. Leave it empty and anyone with the address and password can join.

Remember that `kick` only removes a player for now. They can reconnect straight away. If you want them gone, use `ban`.

## Common issues

**I type `/kick` and nothing happens.** Valheim takes these commands without a slash. Use `kick PlayerName`.

**I added myself as admin but I still have no commands.** The server had not re-read the list yet. Restart it from the panel and reconnect.

**The panel will not accept my ID.** A SteamID64 is 17 digits starting with `7656`. The friend code from the Steam overlay, and the older `STEAM_0:` style ID, are different formats. If in doubt, paste your Steam profile link and let the panel resolve it.

**`devcommands` prints nothing.** Expected. Cheats are single-player and locally hosted worlds only, as covered above.

**I kicked someone and they came back.** `kick` is temporary by design. Use `ban`, then confirm with `banned`.

**A command worked for me but not for my friend.** Only accounts in `adminlist.txt` get the admin commands. Add their SteamID64 as well and restart.

Still setting things up?
